SUMMARY:Healing Our World
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Conference 2026 – Healing Our World: From Despair to Repair\nHealing Our World: From Despair to Repair \nOur Autumn Conference\, Healing Our World: From Despair to Repair\, is fast approaching\, and we are delighted to announce an exceptional programme of speakers\, thinkers\, activists and artists. \nJoining us this year is Mike Berners-Lee\, one of the UK’s most respected voices on sustainability and climate action. A professor\, consultant and bestselling author of A Climate of Truth\, There Is No Planet B and How Bad Are Bananas? Mike is known for helping people navigate the challenges of our time with both honesty and hope. His work spans climate science\, food systems\, technology and practical pathways towards a thriving future. \nAlso joining the speaker line-up is Phoebe Tickell\, biologist\, systems thinker\, and social entrepreneur who applies complexity and biological network theory to societal transformation. She is the founder of Moral Imaginations\, an activist design lab dedicated to driving systemic change and catalyzing regenerative futures through collective imagination. \nWe are also thrilled to welcome Donnachadh McCarthy\, renowned environmental campaigner\, author and media commentator. Following a life-changing encounter with Indigenous communities in the Amazon\, Donnachadh has dedicated more than three decades to environmental action\, social change and ecological restoration. His conference talk will explore the lessons he has learned from combining activism with spiritual practice\, offering inspiration for anyone seeking to contribute to healing our world while sustaining themselves along the way. \nFor the first time to an international audience\, artist and iconographer Angela Manno will introduce and demonstrate the use of her Sacred Biodiversity Oracle based on her icons of threatened and endangered species. Live stream and Universal Hall audience participants will take part in a process that engages both heart and mind and evokes a desire to take meaningful action on behalf of our fellow creatures. Central to this process is an exercise in Visio divina (sacred seeing) that stimulates the intuition and emotions. The Action component offers participants a way to connect with specially curated international conservation and anti-wildlife trafficking organizations to learn ways they can help. Be prepared to be informed\, moved\, and inspired by what we can do together to repair the fabric of life on our beautiful planet. \nTogether\, these speakers and artists reflect the spirit of this year’s conference: bringing together practical solutions\, courageous conversations\, creative expression and deeper connection in response to the challenges facing our world. \nFor those joining us globally on zoom \, we will offer curated experiences and exclusive opportunities for a Q&A with some of our presenters and participants.

SUMMARY:Backyard Buffer Design Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Join the Upper and Middle James Riparian Consortium for a hands-on Backyard Buffer Design Workshop from 10am to 3pm on October 6th (Charlottesville) or October 20th (Chesterfield). Riparian landowners\, landscape designers\, and anyone interested in backyard buffer restoration is invited to join. \nThis free workshop will provide practical experience with conducting a site assessment and designing a backyard buffer\, with special attention to the different design considerations of small residential sites and how the Virginia Conservation Assistance Program (VCAP) may be an avenue for funding. Optional pre-workshop session on desktop site assessment starting at 9am. Learn more and register! \n\n4 CBLP CEUS available

SUMMARY:ELA Advanced Design Workshop with Claudia West
DESCRIPTION:There is an urgent need for ecologically rich\, inspiring plantings in the places where we live\, work\, and play. \nIn this workshop\, Claudia introduces her firm’s innovative approach—combining ecological models\, computer simulations\, and restoration strategies to design resilient\, low-maintenance plant systems. These systems address real-world challenges such as tight budgets\, tough site conditions\, and limited horticultural expertise. Claudia will explore the transformative potential of more autonomous planting strategies to combat habitat loss and species decline in an urbanizing\, warming world. Through compelling case studies\, she will demonstrate how well-designed plant systems can support biodiversity while enriching the human experience. Participants will engage in hands-on design exercises and group discussions to apply these ideas in practice. This one-day workshop is specifically designed for landscape designers and architects. \nLearning objectives \n\nUnderstand how ecological models and restoration principles can inform the design of resilient\, low-maintenance planting systems.\nIdentify strategies to overcome common barriers in planting design and management\, including limited budgets\, harsh conditions\, and maintenance constraints.\nExplore the role of more autonomous planting systems in addressing habitat loss and supporting biodiversity in urban environments.\nDiscover methods for making resilient plant systems both visually compelling and emotionally evocative.\nApply key concepts through hands-on design exercises that translate theory into practice for real-world landscape challenges.”\n\nCEU INFORMATION \nThis daylong workshop has been approved for the following CEU’s. Additional CEU’s are being sought and will be posted here as they are approved. \n\nAssociation of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD 4.25)\nChesapeake Bay Landscape Professionals (CBLP 6.0)\nLandscape Architecture Continuing Education System (6.0 credits)
