DESCRIPTION:Green roofs are an important tool in reducing the negative impacts of stormwater on our local streams and rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. In the Washington\, DC region\, local governments require green roofs on some new construction\, and several municipal programs encourage the implementation of green roofs\, but many roofs are not well-managed once installed. This course seeks to empower local contractors with the skills needed to provide maintenance services for green roofs. \nBy the end of this course\, participants will be able to: \nDescribe Chesapeake Bay restoration and local watershed protection efforts. \nExplain the importance of green roof maintenance for water quality goals. \nUnderstand basic green roof construction and components. \nAssess green roof condition and identify maintenance needs. \nPerform routine and non-routine green roof maintenance tasks. \nRecognize safety requirements and challenges of working on green roofs. \nDevelop and implement a maintenance plan for a green roof. \nRegister before June 18 and save $20! \n5.5 CBLP CEUs

In this course\, we focus on how to effectively design an aesthetically pleasing urban buffer that overcomes these challenges while helping meet water quality and habitat restoration goals. This interactive three-part workshop will combine online learning with an optional field trip to one of three sites in Virginia. Participants will then work collaboratively in small groups to develop a design for an urban buffer. DESCRIPTION:Volunteers Needed: Installation of Living Shoreline Oyster Sill – Multiple Days; May 8-July 10\, 2025 – Hampton\, VA – Volunteer to help install a 1\,000 foot living shoreline oyster sill along the Hampton River. \nJoin the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) for the installation of a 1\,000-linear-foot living shoreline oyster sill at Pine Cone Harbour Condominiums along the Hampton River. This part of the project will involve placing 4\,692 oyster castles\, 720 bushels of recycled oyster shells\, 650 Natrx Basalt Shell Bags\, and 22 coconut fiber coir logs\, each measuring 12 feet by 16 inches. \nThe Pine Cone Harbour Living Shoreline project represents the first collaboration between the CBF’s Hampton Roads Oyster Team and the Urban Restoration Team. Both teams are implementing projects directly offshore from one another. This partnership ensures that all habitats along the tidal slope\, from subtidal areas to the riparian buffer\, are considered as an integrated whole. By addressing these ecosystems comprehensively and viewing each section as part of a larger mosaic\, the project aims to achieve effective implementation and lasting improvements in water quality. \nA special thanks to the Blocker Foundation for supporting this work! \nRegister one day or several days. SUMMARY:MNPS Monthly Program: Uncommon to Rare Apiaceae in Maryland with Rod Simmons
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rod Simmons \nYOU MUST REGISTER IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE ZOOM LINK \nZoom opens at 7:00PM for pre-program board update and member Q&A. Presentations begin at 7:30PM and generally run until 8:45PM. \nA diversity of now-threatened Apiaceae occurs in Maryland\, with many restricted to particular physiographic regions and habitats. Rod Simmons\, plant ecologist and MNPS Board member\, will give a presentation on a variety of uncommon to rare Apiaceae in Maryland and vicinity\, especially regarding their associated natural communities and habitats. Identification will also be discussed. \nRod is a plant ecologist and conservation biologist\, with a background in biology\, botany\, and geology who has extensively surveyed the flora and natural communities of the mid-Atlantic region\, especially the inner Coastal Plain\, Fall Zone\, and Piedmont of the greater Washington\, D.C. area. He is a Research Associate with the National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution; a member of the Virginia Botanical Associates; former contract botanist for NatureServe\, National Park Service\, and others; and works closely with the Virginia and Maryland natural heritage programs. He is the author of numerous technical reports\, papers\, and articles\, and has published in scientific journals. He is a member and a past president of the Botanical Society of Washington and serves on the boards of the Virginia and Maryland native plant societies. He is a frequent lecturer and field trip leader for various organizations. He recently retired as Natural Resource Manager and Plant Ecologist for the City of Alexandria\, Virginia. \nWe can accommodate the first 300 people who enter the Zoom meeting at the meeting time. SUMMARY:Smart Salting: Enhanced Winter Maintenance Training (Maryland)
DESCRIPTION:The use of winter salts has increased over the past decade during winter weather for safer roadways\, parking lots\, and sidewalks. However\, excessive salt application can damage infrastructure\, pollute waterways in our environment\, and pose threats to human health. This training program aims to provide a voluntary\, statewide winter salt certification for private applicators that balances safety during winter weather months while minimizing salt application\, improving application methods and your bottom line\, and reducing contamination in the environment. \nThe target audience for this training course includes property managers\, business owners\, landscaping companies\, and private contractors/salt applicators interested in learning effective ice melting strategies that protect the environment while also maintaining profitability and meeting customer safety expectations. \nThis training course is in partnership with Maryland Department of the Environment and University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center. A certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional will lead the training series offering their practical expertise.   \nThis hybrid (virtual and in-person) training series will run from October 2024 – December 2024. The property contains 90 acres of planted meadows\, shrub thickets\, and woodland glades that stretch from the property borders to the museum buildings. This organically planted and maintained landscape illustrates how landscape architects (Peter Walker Partners)\, native plant consultants (Larry Weaner Landscape Associates)\, and an in-house management team can collaborate in the service of ecology\, art\, and a stimulating visitor experience.
