SUMMARY:Smart Salting: Enhanced Winter Maintenance Training (Maryland)
DESCRIPTION:The use of winter salts has increased over the past decade during winter weather for safer roadways\, parking lots\, and sidewalks. However\, excessive salt application can damage infrastructure\, pollute waterways in our environment\, and pose threats to human health. This training program aims to provide a voluntary\, statewide winter salt certification for private applicators that balances safety during winter weather months while minimizing salt application\, improving application methods and your bottom line\, and reducing contamination in the environment. \nThe target audience for this training course includes property managers\, business owners\, landscaping companies\, and private contractors/salt applicators interested in learning effective ice melting strategies that protect the environment while also maintaining profitability and meeting customer safety expectations. \nThis training course is in partnership with Maryland Department of the Environment and University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center. A certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional will lead the training series offering their practical expertise.   \nThis hybrid (virtual and in-person) training series will run from October 2024 – December 2024. Sharon Selvaggio\, Pesticide Program Specialist at The Xerces Society\, will discuss why choosing pollinator-safe nurseries is important\, what drives the nursery industry’s use of pesticides and how plant buyers can evaluate nursery practices. She will also introduce Xerces’ new adoptable contract grow model for obtaining pollinator-safe native plants in quantity. \nTiny\, inconspicuous and unappreciated species hold our world together. On their behalf\, Sharon Selvaggio\, a staff member in The Xerces Society’s Pesticide Program\, works to help people recognize the risks of pesticides and move away from pesticide reliance toward more prevention-based pest management. Sharon is a former biologist and refuge manager with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, and prior to Xerces\, worked for several years with Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides. \nYOU MUST REGISTER IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE ZOOM LINK \nWe can accommodate the first 300 people who enter the Zoom meeting at the meeting time. Join us and add your business to the growing network of contractors planting and managing buffers to improve water quality across the Bay region. \n2.5 CBLP CEUs will be available. \nPanelists Information: \nJustin Ulanoski: \n \nJustin Ulanoski is a graduate of King’s College with a bachelor’s in Environmental Studies. Throughout high school & college\, Justin developed a passion for landscape & environment while working with a local landscape company & being actively involved with Boy Scouts of America where he obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. After college\, he went on to work as an environmental scientist where he conducted wetland delineations & developed his interest in native plants & conservation. Justin joined a reforestation company\, where he continued to develop his passion for conservation & native plants. During his 8.5 years with the company\, Justin wrote & implemented hundreds of conservation & reforestation plans for forested riparian buffers\, wetland restoration/mitigation\, land & mine reclamation\, & wildlife habitat projects for over 30\,000 acres throughout Pennsylvania\, Maryland\, Ohio\, New York\, Kentucky\, West Virginia\, Virginia\, & North Carolina. After holding the position of regional manager\, Justin decided to follow his goals of forming a conservation landscape company & founded Native Creations in 2013 with a focus of bringing his knowledge of native plants into residential & commercial landscapes\, as well as continuing to install forested riparian buffers for conservation benefits. \nSince the formation of Native Creations \, they have been planting riparian buffers with numerous conservancies and conservation partners throughout Northeast and Central Pennsylvania and have written numerous conservation plans\, implementing hundreds of acres of riparian buffers\, pollinator meadows & wildlife habitat plantings. They have also written & implemented numerous residential & commercial landscape plans with native plant species. \nAs of 2018\, Justin obtained Level 1 Certification for conservation landscape installation & verification under the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP) in order to further his understanding and commitment of designing and implementing sustainable landscapes as well as implementation\, inspection\, and design of stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs). Currently\, Justin has also become a trainer for the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council. \n  \nAmber Ellis: \n \nAmber Ellis is the Restoration Director with the James River Association. Building diverse partnerships to restore streamside forests is at the heart of her work across the James River watershed. Since 2019\, Amber has served as the convener for the Upper and Middle James Riparian Consortium and manages the James River Buffer Program. She earned a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Virginia Tech\, where she learned how to create landscapes that enrich both our human and natural communities. She is a Professional Landscape Architect in Virginia\, a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional\, and has a certificate in Ecotherapy through the EarthBody Institute. \n  \nJay Ashby: \n \nUniversity of Delaware\, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture ‘92 \nISA Certified Arborist and Municipal Specialist PD 2050 AM \nMD LTE # 2204 \nNJ LTE # 641 \nDelaware Certified Nursery Professional. \nDelaware Dept of Agriculture\, Urban and Community Forestry Council Member and Current Chair \nHave Been involved in Delaware Green Industry for the last 35 years. (Install\, Design\, Maintenance\, Sales\, ETC.) \nCurrently Director of Operations at Cypress Tree Care\, LLC. \n  \nCara Mattlin \n \nCara Mattlin is the Nursery Manager at Ecotone\, LLC\, an ecological restoration company based in Forest Hill\, MD. She has worked in the industry for over six years\, mostly as a horticulturalist\, but also as a field technician performing tree\, wildlife\, and invasive surveys as well as wetland delineations and landscape designs. She also manages the forestry team which performs planting\, maintenance\, invasive management\, monitoring\, etc. As Ecotone’s native nursery expands\, Cara is heavily focused on sourcing local\, genetically diverse plants. She fosters relationships with organizations such as non-profits and other nurseries to promote expertise and skills to meet goals of environmental restoration projects. Industry growth demands skilled maintenance technicians\, and Ecotone has acknowledged this by assembling a team dedicated to properly managing our valuable land. \n  \nNick Myers \n \nNick is the Maintenance Supervisor for LandStudies\, Inc. in Lancaster County\, PA\, and oversees all of their natural area maintenance\, which is primarily invasive species management. He has been with LSI for 11 years after returning from graduate school at Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs. He’s been involved in ecological restoration since 2001 and has worked for private restoration companies\, local parks\, and non-profits for much of that time. His “offices” have been in wetlands\, prairies\, and forested sites across 7 different states. He’s really good at getting equipment stuck in the mud and has a large quarter jar for talking about plants un-asked. \n  \nHarrison Woytko \n \nHarrison Woytko is the President of Boulder Landscape\, LLC\, a landscape & hardscape design/build company located in Berwick\, PA. \nPrior to working at Boulder Landscape\, he has served a variety of engineering roles in heavy metal manufacturing and oil & gas field sectors. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Delaware. \nHarrison resides in Berwick\, PA and spends his free time with family\, friends\, and his golden retriever Frankie. He enjoys traveling as much as possible along with frequenting the Adirondack Mountains in upstate NY. \n  \nJennifer Dombroskie \n \nJennifer currently manages the riparian program at ClearWater Conservancy\, a non-profit organization in Centre County.  ClearWater’s mission is to conserve and restore our natiral resources through land conservation\, water resources stewardship\, and environmental outreach across central Pennsylvania.  The riparian program focuses on restoring and stewarding streamside forests. \n  \nLowrie Tucker (Lowrie) \n \nI started in this industry as a forestry technician for the USDA Forest Service. I then worked for Virginia’s Conservation Districts and County Governments\, specifically in Erosion and Sediment Control. In September 2010\, I joined the Conservation Services team. I spend most of my day consulting with customers\, discussing and fulfilling their needs. I graduated from Emory and Henry with a B.S. in Environmental Studies and received a M.S. in Organizational Leadership from Shenandoah University. I live in Crozet with my wife Jillian\, my son Walter and my daughter Claire. When I am not at work\, I spend time with my family\, visiting friends and traveling to other parts of the country on trips that generally include a visit to the national parks. \n  \n

Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware\, where he has authored 112 research publications and has taught insect-related courses for 42 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many\nways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His books include Bringing Nature Home\, The Living Landscape\, co-authored with Rick Darke\, Nature’s Best Hope\, a New York Times Best Seller\, The Nature of Oaks\, winner of the American\nHorticultural Society’s 2022 book award. In 2021 he cofounded Homegrown National Park with Michelle Alfandari (HomegrownNationalPark.org). His awards include recognition from The Garden Writer’s Association\, Audubon\, The National Wildlife Federation\, Allegheny College\, Ecoforesters\, The\nGarden Club of America and The American Horticultural Association.\nNature’s Best Hope Recent headlines about global insect declines and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. To create landscapes that enhance local ecosystems rather than degrade them\, we must 1) remove the invasives on our property and 2) add the native plant communities that sustain\nfood webs\, sequester carbon\, maintain diverse native bee communities\, and manage our watersheds. If we do this in half of the area now in lawn\, we can create Homegrown National Park\, a network of viable habitats throughout the U.S. that will provide vital corridors connecting the few natural areas that\nremain. This approach to conservation empowers everyone to play a significant role in the future of the natural world. It is also enormously restorative for those who take action. \nKelsey Johnson Ph. D. University of Virginia astronomer\, president of the American Astronomical Society\, and creator of the “Dark Skies\, Bright Kids” program\, has devoted her career to understanding the stars and preserving their beauty for future generations. As part of her advocacy for dark skies\, her\nNew York Times article and TED talk on light pollution are both available on-line.\nSaving the Darkness: How to Put a Dimmer Switch on Light Pollution and Bring Back the Night Sky\nHow many stars can you see from your home? For many Americans\, the answer is only a handful. Our ancestors once saw many thousands. The growing flood of artificial light pollution\, and the disappearance of\nour night skies\, are taking a toll on flora and fauna\, as well as affecting human health. The good news is there are ways to combat it. DESCRIPTION:CBLP Brownfields Advanced Landscape Restoration Design Workshop \nTuesday\, February 6\, 2024- online via Zoom \nThursday\, February 8\, 2024 – in person\, Norfolk\, VA \nThe objective of this workshop is to develop a landscape restoration plan for a Brownfields site in Chesapeake\, Virginia\, applying conservation landscaping and phytoremediation principles. Instructors from Stromberg\, Garrigan\, and Associates will direct a facilitated design charrette process to guide small group design teams through the development of a full design\, to include site synthesis/analysis\, planting plans\, and a project narrative with recommendations and implementation/ management considerations. \nThis workshop is funded in part by a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) Chesapeake Bay Small Watershed Implementation Grant to the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission for the project known as “Engaging Industrial Properties in Water Quality Improvement for the Elizabeth River (VA) . Wetlands Watch and the CBLP program is a subgrantee. \nDay 2 will be held at the Elizabeth River Project’s new Ryan Resilience Lab in Norfolk.  Lunch will be provided on Day 2. \nRegistration fee is $100/person\, and space is limited. \nCBLP CEUs are available
