SUMMARY:Today's Menu: Greening Southside RVA (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Grab your lunch and join us for Today’s Menu! \nWe will hear from Ann Jurczyk\, Director VA Outreach and Advocacy\, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Amy Wentz\, Co-founder\, Southside ReLeaf \nHeat island data collected by volunteers during the summer of 2016 kick-started implementation efforts to reduce the amount of heat-absorbing asphalt and increase the amount of cooling tree canopy in Southside Richmond. CBF and Southside ReLeaf have joined forces to involve and engage neighborhoods in formerly redlined\, currently under-resourced communities to build understanding of and support for green infrastructure projects. Together we’re planting and giving away over 650 trees to start to reverse the tree inequities in Southside RVA. \nThere is no charge for this webinar\, but please register by 9 AM on December 3. \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:Chesapeake Watershed Forum (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The year 2025 marks a historic milestone for the Chesapeake Bay watershed restoration movement. The 2010 Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) set forth necessary nitrogen\, phosphorus\, and sediment reduction targets in a pollution diet that will achieve a level of bay health meeting the survival\, growth\, and reproduction needs of its living resources. The TMDL aims to have the seven jurisdictions put in place by 2025 all the best management practices necessary to provide\, over time\, the reductions in nitrogen\, phosphorus\, and sediment that will improve bay water quality so that it meets all its applicable dissolved oxygen\, water clarity and chlorophyll related water quality standards. We have made notable progress in implementing the necessary actions that will result in pollution reductions leading to a healthy bay – however\, there is still much work to be done in the next four years. \nThrough our theme\, we consider the dualistic priorities of our time. Many of the best practices and approaches in agriculture\, stormwater\, and forestry that will get us to our 2025 goals are already out there. The challenge is how do we disseminate and implement these practices and approaches efficiently\, rapidly\, and at scale by 2025\, and how do we sustain the effectiveness of those efforts beyond 2025. \n

SUMMARY:Changing Landscaping Practices: Implications for Landowners and Local Officials (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:This free webinar will provide information on the benefits as well as challenges of lawn conversion and native landscaping. Speakers will provide firsthand knowledge from their experiences in designing\, installing\, planning for\, and regulating sustainable landscaping. Participants will also learn about new programs being developed to help with outreach\, funding\, and technical assistance for lawn conversion projects. \nTo help landowners manage their lawns in a more economical and environmentally friendly way\, a number of organizations and agencies at the state\, county\, and local levels are encouraging alternatives to the traditional practice of large\, mowed lawns. Such alternatives include maintaining\, creating\, or converting to more natural areas such as native meadows or patches of woods. The benefits of such practices include improved stormwater infiltration\, reduced flooding\, improved stream health\, and additional habitat and forage for pollinators. \nThis new way of managing our landscape is not without challenges\, including issues surrounding property maintenance and related codes\, as well as public/neighborhood perception and acceptance. \nThis event is being offered at no charge to participants. Registration is required to receive the link to access the webinar. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording. \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:Stress-Adapted Native Plant Communities as Templates for Highly Disturbed Landscape Sites
DESCRIPTION:Native plant communities can be found on remarkably difficult sites\, e.g.\, highly alkaline\, saline\, acidic\, droughty\, and flooded. In the Northeast U.S. these communities include alvars\, dunes\, acidic pine barrens\, inland salt marshes\, marl fens\, and other wetlands. A subset of these natural assemblages can be used to create sustainable landscapes on human-made sites\nthat have similarly hostile conditions. Through a pair of presentations ending with an informal conversation and Q&A session\, our presenters will discuss the ecology of these assemblages and how they can be adapted to a wide variety of “difficult site” projects from residential to urban to highly degraded industrial landscapes. \nSpeakers: Dr. Donald J. Leopold & Tim Toland\, RLA\, LEED AP \nYou may claim CBLP CEUs for all NDAL professional classes. SUMMARY:LAWNS\, LEAVES\, & LAWS: Practical Pathways Toward Lawn Alternatives and Ecological Turf Cultivation
DESCRIPTION:From New Directions in the American Landscape\nMany now recognize that the dominance of manicured lawns in many of our landscapes is environmentally harmful. That said\, many homeowner’s associations and municipalities are regulating front yard plant heights and store shelves are still stocked to the brim with pesticide products composed of harmful chemicals. An environmental law professor\, two ecologists\, and an organic turf expert will share practical ways to overcome these hurdles and create more ecologically beneficial landscapes. Their short presentations will be followed by an extensive roundtable discussion and audience Q&A enriched by their interdisciplinary perspectives. \nSarah Schindler\, Rod Simmons\, Nancy Lawson\, & Chip Osborne \nYou may claim CBLP CEUs for all NDAL professional classes. SUMMARY:Novel Ecosystems and the Urban Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The combination of the chronic environmental stress induced by climate change\, the physical disturbances of urbanization\, and the competition presented by globalization (invasive species) interact to create urban novel ecosystems that have no analog with those found in nature.\nPeter Del Tredici will discuss the remarkable ability of spontaneous urban vegetation to rebuild ecological functionality from the ground up\, thereby making cities more livable for all their inhabitants. James Hitchmough will discuss intentionally-designed novel plant communities\, where the general characteristics of historic plant community associations are scientifically\napplied to newly-created plant assemblages with varying nativity. The session will conclude with a spontaneous conversation between our presenters and attendees on how these approaches can enhance the urban landscape. \nYou may claim CBLP CEUs for all NDAL professional classes. SUMMARY:Landscaping for Biodiversity\, A Plant-Insect Perspective (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:While insects often get a bad rap in gardens\, a wide array of insects are quietly performing essential functions for food webs and ecosystems. On Tuesday\, June 15\, University of Maryland researcher Karin Burghardt will introduce you to some of the fascinating insects that dwell in spaces we occupy every day: our gardens\, yards and parks. She’ll also reveal how our activities can shape plant-insect interactions\, and suggest some practices we can use to help preserve biodiversity in the ecosystems closest to home. \nThis webinar is part of the  Smithsonian Environmental Research Center’s free evening lecture series\, and it will be recorded! By signing up on Zoom\, you’ll be able to join live and receive a link to the closed-captioned recording in your inbox as soon as it’s ready.
