SUMMARY:LAWNS\, LEAVES\, & LAWS: Practical Pathways Toward Lawn Alternatives and Ecological Turf Cultivation
DESCRIPTION:From New Directions in the American Landscape\nMany now recognize that the dominance of manicured lawns in many of our landscapes is environmentally harmful. That said\, many homeowner’s associations and municipalities are regulating front yard plant heights and store shelves are still stocked to the brim with pesticide products composed of harmful chemicals. An environmental law professor\, two ecologists\, and an organic turf expert will share practical ways to overcome these hurdles and create more ecologically beneficial landscapes. Their short presentations will be followed by an extensive roundtable discussion and audience Q&A enriched by their interdisciplinary perspectives. \nSarah Schindler\, Rod Simmons\, Nancy Lawson\, & Chip Osborne \nYou may claim CBLP CEUs for all NDAL professional classes. SUMMARY:Novel Ecosystems and the Urban Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The combination of the chronic environmental stress induced by climate change\, the physical disturbances of urbanization\, and the competition presented by globalization (invasive species) interact to create urban novel ecosystems that have no analog with those found in nature.\nPeter Del Tredici will discuss the remarkable ability of spontaneous urban vegetation to rebuild ecological functionality from the ground up\, thereby making cities more livable for all their inhabitants. James Hitchmough will discuss intentionally-designed novel plant communities\, where the general characteristics of historic plant community associations are scientifically\napplied to newly-created plant assemblages with varying nativity. The session will conclude with a spontaneous conversation between our presenters and attendees on how these approaches can enhance the urban landscape. \nYou may claim CBLP CEUs for all NDAL professional classes. SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity: PA Riparian Rangers
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is looking for volunteers in Pennsylvania for their Riparian Ranger Program. Participants will “adopt” a riparian buffer and help to monitor and tend to recently planted trees. This will include tasks like straightening tree tubes\, fixing bird nets\, removing weeds\, monitoring invasives\, and helping to replant any trees that die. Training and supplies will all be provided. This is a great opportunity to support local watershed restoration efforts and greatly increase tree survivorship on riparian buffers. Additional information is included in the attached document. If you are interested or have any questions\, fill out the form linked here or email riparianrangers@allianceforthebay.org. \nYou may use volunteer buffer maintenance for your CBLP year 1 Hands On CEU requirement (min 6 hours)

SUMMARY:NYBG Winter Lecture Series (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Two lectures will be offered:\nFebruary 25\, 11 AM – 12 PM\nLeslie Bennett: Gardens of Sanctuary \nFounder and owner of Pine House Edible Gardens\, Leslie Bennett designs\, builds\, and maintains edible and culturally resonant landscapes that are beautiful and productive. The gardens she creates provide visual\, physical\, and cultural inspiration-along with nourishing organic harvests of food\, flowers and medicinal herbs. With degrees from Harvard\, Columbia Law School\, and University College London in the fields of environmental law\,cultural property\, and social justice\, Bennett brings a rare and important perspective to her landscape designs and her business practices. One effort of Pine House Edible Gardens is the Oakland\, CA-based Black Sanctuary Gardens project\, founded by Bennett in 2018\, which actively works to create garden spaces of refuge and beauty in collaboration with Black women and communities.\nMarch 25\, 11 AM – 12 PM\nLarry Weaner: Music Composition and Landscape Design\n\nFor landscape designer and composer Larry Weaner\, garden design and music composition have much in common. While one may be visual and the other sonic\, both look to explore freedom of expression within formal constraints. Both are endlessly engaging pursuits\, where no matter how much you know\, there is always more to discover. Working with plants—like playing jazz—is a give and take\, a call and response\, where every action stimulates a reaction—with sometimes unexpected consequences. Weaner believes that understanding the principles and techniques of composition can help designers create “musical” landscapes that can evoke powerfully direct emotional responses\, reveal themselves gracefully over time and the seasons\, and incorporate elements of improvisation.\n\n  \n1 CBLP per lecture

SUMMARY:GreenScapes (formerly Green Matters) Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Back to Our Roots: Leveraging Native Plants to Restore the Environment *Live virtual event\nYears of rapid urbanization have fragmented natural habitats with manicured lawns and barren over-development leading to significant declines in biodiversity. How can you reverse this alarming trend? Join us for a fascinating day of innovative presentations that dig deep into how native plants can restore natural ecosystems in a range of landscapes\, from backyards and public gardens to urban and commercial projects. \nExperts will tackle the native vs. non-native plant debate: Is a native plant-only prescription necessary? Under what conditions should non-native plants be incorporated\, and what are the risks of using cultivars? Join the conversation as experts assess the scope of environmental benefits that native ecosystems create\, such as decreasing pollution and fighting climate change. \nWe’ll explore the latest strategies to combat pollinator population collapse\, considering key factors like pollination syndromes\, specialist pollinators\, plant genetics and floral balance. Speakers will demonstrate the latest tools to assess the sustainability of sites\, including best practices for evidence-based designs that maximize the ecological\, social and economic benefits of native landscapes. \nDoug Tallamy is the keynote speaker. \nCBLP CEUs are available \n
