SUMMARY:GreenScapes (formerly Green Matters) Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Back to Our Roots: Leveraging Native Plants to Restore the Environment *Live virtual event\nYears of rapid urbanization have fragmented natural habitats with manicured lawns and barren over-development leading to significant declines in biodiversity. How can you reverse this alarming trend? Join us for a fascinating day of innovative presentations that dig deep into how native plants can restore natural ecosystems in a range of landscapes\, from backyards and public gardens to urban and commercial projects. \nExperts will tackle the native vs. non-native plant debate: Is a native plant-only prescription necessary? Under what conditions should non-native plants be incorporated\, and what are the risks of using cultivars? Join the conversation as experts assess the scope of environmental benefits that native ecosystems create\, such as decreasing pollution and fighting climate change. \nWe’ll explore the latest strategies to combat pollinator population collapse\, considering key factors like pollination syndromes\, specialist pollinators\, plant genetics and floral balance. Speakers will demonstrate the latest tools to assess the sustainability of sites\, including best practices for evidence-based designs that maximize the ecological\, social and economic benefits of native landscapes. \nDoug Tallamy is the keynote speaker. \nCBLP CEUs are available \n

SUMMARY:New Directions in the American Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Virtual 32nd Annual Landscape Design Symposium\nJanuary 21 & 22\, 2021 | 1 – 4:30 PM EST \nJanuary 28 & 29\, 2021 | 9 AM – 12:30 PM EST\n \nAll four dates are distinct programs with different speakers – register for the full bundle or for individual days. Early registration closes December 16. \nIncorporating science into landscape design is of little use if the resulting plantings are not harmonious to the people who engage with them\, and are not in tune with the animals that depend on them. In this virtual symposium we will explore how scientific research can lead to tangible approaches for a new landscape tradition – one where ecological\, anthropological\, and sociological considerations expand the scope of landscape design. \nhttps://www.conncoll.edu/media/website-media/images/content/arbo/Symposium-Brochure-2021.pdf \nUp to 12 CBLP CEUs are available

SUMMARY:Webinar: Reducing Stormwater Runoff with Biochar Addition to Soils in Ellicott City
DESCRIPTION:The University of Delaware\, in conjunction with Howard Ecoworks\, conducted an innovative research project to test the runoff reduction potential of biochar as a soil amendment. Biochar was amended to two test sites in Ellicott City\, MD\, and infiltration and other soil properties were monitored over a 1.5-year period. The impact of biochar on increasing stormwater infiltration rates and annual average stormwater infiltration will be presented. This work was funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:Chesapeake Watershed Forum
DESCRIPTION:Registration opens on August 24. \nThe Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s 15th Annual Chesapeake Watershed Forum (to be held online October 29 – 30) is a watershed-wide event reaching over 400 restoration and protection practitioners to inspire and empower local action towards clean water. We share successful tools and techniques\, offer lessons and learnings from on-the-ground work\, build capacities of local organizations\, foster partnerships\, educate on new initiatives and emerging practices\, network among each other\, and celebrate our successes. \nThrough our theme\, “Climate Resiliency in a Changing Chesapeake Watershed\,” we share our responses to the changing climatic and sea level conditions that alter the natural and human systems of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. We seek to highlight restoration and conservation approaches and policies that enhance the resiliency of our lands\, aquatic systems\, and communities to withstand adverse impacts of climate change\, such as more intense and frequent storms\, extreme coastal and inland flooding\, sea level rise\, altered weather patterns\, and seasonable variability. We hope to expand our understanding of the human effects of climate change\, including its ties to public health\, human migration\, and social justice. We will look to address climate change as an inherent issue of environmental justice\, and its disproportionate impact upon communities of color and low-income communities. Finally\, we seek models of resilient partnerships capable of withstanding the stressors and adversity posed by climate change. \nCBLP CEUs are available.

SUMMARY:Waynesboro Webinar Series with Trees VA: Urban Tree Canopy Cover: Structure\, Function\, and Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Eric Wiseman\, Virginia Tech\nUrban tree canopy cover is the aggregation of overhead vegetation in built environments that provides critical ecosystem services ranging from increased property values to better human health. To maximize these benefits\, we must understand the spatial and temporal patterns of tree canopy cover. Technology advancements are rapidly improving our ability to assess tree canopy cover and make better decisions about urban forest conservation and management. In this presentation\, you will learn about the structure and function of urban tree canopy cover and publicly-available tools to easily assess canopy cover in your community.

SUMMARY:Webinar: NATIVE GRASSES FOR USE IN HOME GARDENS AND NATIVE MEADOWS
DESCRIPTION:Fall is the time that our native grasses strut their stuff! Join us for a fun\, non-technical discussion of native grasses and their \n\ndesign/aesthetic considerations for use in garden beds\,\nuse in native meadows\,\n soil and light requirements\,\n establishment and maintenance techniques.\n\nThe species we will discuss include: wood oats\, bottlebrush\, Virginia wildrye\, indiangrass\, little bluestem\, switchgrass\, purpletop\, bushy beardgrass\, purple lovegrass\, and woolgrass. \nOur speaker will be Dr. Sara Tangren. Her areas of specialization include native landscaping\, native seed production\, the native industry\, meadow making\, invasive plant control\, and rare plant conservation. Her restoration work has included a collaboration with the Anacostia Watershed Society to restore plant communities along the Anacostia River Bank\, with the University of Maryland Arboretum & Botanical Garden to protect the rare wildflower sundial lupine\, with MNCPPC to establish native meadows\, and with PEPCO to restore a native meadow community. She established the first native gardens at the University of Maryland in 2006\, and she has designed and implemented native gardens for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, the Vice President’s Mansion\, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. More recently she taught about native plants and sustainable landscaping for the Maryland Master Gardener program. She is currently concluding a report on native plant and seed use in the Eastern United States. \nThe program will be presented online through Zoom\, in webinar format. You will not be able to share your own audio or video with other participants\, but you will be able to submit questions in writing during the program. \nRegistration is required. After you register\, you will receive a registration confirmation email with a link to the Zoom program.  \nThe program is free and open to the public. \n1 CBLP CEU is available

SUMMARY:BAY 101: A VIRTUAL SEMINAR SERIES\, SCIENCE OF THE CHESAPEAKE FOR NON-SCIENTISTS
DESCRIPTION:“Bay 101 – Science of the Chesapeake for Non-Scientists” is a series of five seminars hosted by Horn Point Laboratory faculty to shed light into the mysteries of the Bay\, by highlighting Horn Point Laboratory programs working to improve the health of the Bay and its aquatic life. \nWhile the Horn Point Laboratory is closed to the public\, we will share this educational series virtually starting Wednesday\, July 8 – August 5 at 5:00 pm.  The 30 minute programs will each cover a specific topic and questions and participation is encouraged. \nRegistration is required for these FREE programs. Register HERE or contact Carin Starr at cstarr@umces.edu. \nThe Chesapeake Bay and its rivers are the lifeblood of the Eastern Shore\, defining the region like no other water body in the world. While many easily recognize the natural beauty Bay country offers\, the Horn Point Laboratory is offering “Bay 101 – Science of the Chesapeake for Non-Scientists” designed to make the science of the Chesapeake Bay as accessible as its beauty. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBay 101 seminars include:\n\n\n\nJuly 8: Chesapeake Bay’s currents and winds for sailors and water enthusiasts with Bill Boicourt\nBeneath the sometimes hard-to-predict tides of Chesapeake Bay are remarkably dynamic motions. We will explore this classic estuary and the forces that drive it. \nJuly 15: News on living shorelines to protect our waterfronts with  Cindy Palinkas\nLiving shorelines are a more natural way to protect shorelines from erosion and provide valuable coastal habitat. Learn about what happens after they are installed\, both at the shoreline and in adjacent waters. \nJuly 22: Bolstering the Maryland oyster aquaculture industry with Shannon Hood\nOyster aquaculture is a growing industry in Maryland\, attracting people from diverse backgrounds. Learn about this industry which provides an opportunity to feed a growing population\, while providing ecological benefits that can benefit all of us. \nJuly 29: Modeling: what it is and how it helps predict the future of the Chesapeake Bay with Kenny Rose\nMany large-scale restoration projects rely heavily on computer simulation models to determine the best ways to restore the system and how progress will track in time. Learn the basics of these types of models and how they are used\, using Chesapeake Bay as an example. \nAugust 5: Chesapeake Bay underwater grasses with Lorie Staver\nUnderwater grasses are an important component of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and an indicator of Bay health. Learn about what they are\, why they matter\, and about our role in their decline and recovery.”

SUMMARY:Webinar: Rx for Hot Cities: Urban Greening and Cooling to Reduce Heat-Related Mortality in Los Angeles and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Extreme heat and its health impacts are on the rise. Annually\, extreme heat already causes more deaths in the United States than all other weather-related causes combined\, with effects most pronounced in urban areas. Reducing urban heat exposure is an equity issue\, as low-income communities and communities of color are more likely to live in neighborhoods with older buildings\, low tree cover\, more heat-retaining surfaces\, and limited access to coping mechanisms such as air conditioning. In this webinar\, Edith de Guzman will introduce the efforts of the Los Angeles Urban Cooling Collaborative (LAUCC) — a multi-disciplinary\, national partnership of researchers and practitioners working to understand and implement urban cooling strategies in Los Angeles. Dr. David Eisenman will discuss heat-health impacts on the human body and how choices made in urban environments may prevent heat-related illness and death. Dr. Larry Kalkstein will present methods and findings of a recently-completed LAUCC modeling study revealing how various tree cover and solar reflectance “prescriptions” in L.A. could delay warming impacts and reduce heat-related mortality\, temperature\, humidity\, and oppressive air masses that lead to increased deaths\, and how this work could have relevance elsewhere. \n\n\nContact the Urban Forest Technology & Science Delivery Team at urban@fs.fed.us with questions\, feedback\, requests for special accommodations\, or speaker suggestions.
