SUMMARY:BAY 101: A VIRTUAL SEMINAR SERIES\, SCIENCE OF THE CHESAPEAKE FOR NON-SCIENTISTS
DESCRIPTION:“Bay 101 – Science of the Chesapeake for Non-Scientists” is a series of five seminars hosted by Horn Point Laboratory faculty to shed light into the mysteries of the Bay\, by highlighting Horn Point Laboratory programs working to improve the health of the Bay and its aquatic life. \nWhile the Horn Point Laboratory is closed to the public\, we will share this educational series virtually starting Wednesday\, July 8 – August 5 at 5:00 pm.  The 30 minute programs will each cover a specific topic and questions and participation is encouraged. \nRegistration is required for these FREE programs. Register HERE or contact Carin Starr at cstarr@umces.edu. \nThe Chesapeake Bay and its rivers are the lifeblood of the Eastern Shore\, defining the region like no other water body in the world. While many easily recognize the natural beauty Bay country offers\, the Horn Point Laboratory is offering “Bay 101 – Science of the Chesapeake for Non-Scientists” designed to make the science of the Chesapeake Bay as accessible as its beauty. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBay 101 seminars include:\n\n\n\nJuly 8: Chesapeake Bay’s currents and winds for sailors and water enthusiasts with Bill Boicourt\nBeneath the sometimes hard-to-predict tides of Chesapeake Bay are remarkably dynamic motions. We will explore this classic estuary and the forces that drive it. \nJuly 15: News on living shorelines to protect our waterfronts with  Cindy Palinkas\nLiving shorelines are a more natural way to protect shorelines from erosion and provide valuable coastal habitat. Learn about what happens after they are installed\, both at the shoreline and in adjacent waters. \nJuly 22: Bolstering the Maryland oyster aquaculture industry with Shannon Hood\nOyster aquaculture is a growing industry in Maryland\, attracting people from diverse backgrounds. Learn about this industry which provides an opportunity to feed a growing population\, while providing ecological benefits that can benefit all of us. \nJuly 29: Modeling: what it is and how it helps predict the future of the Chesapeake Bay with Kenny Rose\nMany large-scale restoration projects rely heavily on computer simulation models to determine the best ways to restore the system and how progress will track in time. Learn the basics of these types of models and how they are used\, using Chesapeake Bay as an example. \nAugust 5: Chesapeake Bay underwater grasses with Lorie Staver\nUnderwater grasses are an important component of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and an indicator of Bay health. Learn about what they are\, why they matter\, and about our role in their decline and recovery.”

SUMMARY:Webinar: Rx for Hot Cities: Urban Greening and Cooling to Reduce Heat-Related Mortality in Los Angeles and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Extreme heat and its health impacts are on the rise. Annually\, extreme heat already causes more deaths in the United States than all other weather-related causes combined\, with effects most pronounced in urban areas. Reducing urban heat exposure is an equity issue\, as low-income communities and communities of color are more likely to live in neighborhoods with older buildings\, low tree cover\, more heat-retaining surfaces\, and limited access to coping mechanisms such as air conditioning. In this webinar\, Edith de Guzman will introduce the efforts of the Los Angeles Urban Cooling Collaborative (LAUCC) — a multi-disciplinary\, national partnership of researchers and practitioners working to understand and implement urban cooling strategies in Los Angeles. Dr. David Eisenman will discuss heat-health impacts on the human body and how choices made in urban environments may prevent heat-related illness and death. Dr. Larry Kalkstein will present methods and findings of a recently-completed LAUCC modeling study revealing how various tree cover and solar reflectance “prescriptions” in L.A. could delay warming impacts and reduce heat-related mortality\, temperature\, humidity\, and oppressive air masses that lead to increased deaths\, and how this work could have relevance elsewhere. \n\n\nContact the Urban Forest Technology & Science Delivery Team at urban@fs.fed.us with questions\, feedback\, requests for special accommodations\, or speaker suggestions. SUMMARY:Native Bees with Sam Droege
DESCRIPTION:Bees are tiny\, one bush or one clump of perennials is often all it takes to foster native bees in your yard. Within a mile of your yard (urban or rural) there are at least over 100 species of bees looking for the right plants. Decline of honeybees is well documented\, but trends in local native bee species remain uncertain. What do we know about native bees?\nLearn from Sam Droege\, wildlife biologist with the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center\, who has spent years studying and tracking native bees. \n2 CBLP CEUs

SUMMARY:Webinar- Site Analysis: the First Step in Successful Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:The success of newly planted trees in the landscape is not just dependent on proper planting and after care\, but also on proper analysis of the planting site. Site analysis considers the characteristics and history of the landscape to help ensure successful tree planting projects. This webinar reviews the site characteristics and how past history of a site can help determine what tree species are appropriate for planting.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Salt In the Water\, Action on the Ground
DESCRIPTION:Each winter\, billions of pounds of salt are spread on America’s roads to keep drivers and pedestrians safe. But all this salt poses a major health risk to both humans and wildlife. Join us to learn about how excessive salt affects benthic macroinvertebrates and other aquatic life in freshwater streams\, and how one local community group is raising awareness and changing behavior around salt in the community! Dr. John Jackson is a Senior Research Scientist at Stroud Water Research Center. He research includes population and evolutionary ecology of stream insects\, the role of abiotic and biotic processes in determining the structure and function of stream assemblages\, energy and nutrient exchange within streams and between streams and their surrounding watersheds\, and benthic monitoring and water quality assessment. Kevin Roth is the Education and Outreach Coordinator of the Pennypack Ecological Trust. In addition to his work as an educator and program manager\, Kevin organizes a number of volunteer initiatives including Winter Salt Watch volunteers. \n1 CBLP CEU is available

SUMMARY:Webinar: A Call To Action for the Ash Tree
DESCRIPTION:Ash tree species in North America are under mortal threat from the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)\, now in 35 states and five Canadian provinces.  There are ongoing efforts to conserve this native tree species by producing genetically diverse\, resistant seedlings suitable for restoring ash on the landscape.  Identifying “lingering ash” is a critical component of amplifying these efforts\, and this presentation will explain the narrow window of time in which urgent actions are needed to discover and preserve these individuals.  Once identified\, these trees can be replicated through grafting for further testing.  Trees that are shown to have some level of resistance can be used as parents in conservation breeding programs.  Kathleen Knight and Jennifer Koch of the USDA Forest Service will review EAB and ash tree mortality from an ecological perspective and report on the breeding program and latest results.  Jonathan Rosenthal of the Ecololgical Research Institute will share a model training program\, based on their results\, to find and collect materials critical for breeding resistance into the ash tree population. \nGo to the website for login info \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:Leaping to Solutions Climate Change Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is a topic of daily conversation these days. Scientists have well-documented evidence that human activity\, starting with the dawn of the industrial revolution\, is the driving force behind these changes. During our November 2018 symposium\, we touched on the topic of climate change and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees genuinely appreciated the chance to hear the facts and gain a better understanding of climate change basics.\nBased on that feedback\, we’re focusing this symposium solely on climate change. Come join us on Leap Day\, Saturday\, February 29\, 2020 to expand on the basics and have the chance to hear from local officials on how cities in the Tidewater area are preparing to mitigate the challenges associated with sea level rise.  \nAs an added bonus that day\, Elizabeth River Project will host their 2nd Annual Youth Resilience Expo. See how students in grades K-12 envision solutions to address flooding\, promote resilience actions and reduce their carbon footprint at their schools. We’ve built in extra time during lunch for symposium attendees to enjoy these innovative solutions. \n4 CBLP CEUs are available
