SUMMARY:Green Matters Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Practical Solutions For Ecologically Sustainable Landscapes\nThis symposium will offer practical solutions to help shift the focus of gardening and landscape design away from merely aesthetics and towards creating and managing sustainable landscapes. Industry experts will explore how native plants can be incorporated into our landscapes while realizing the ecological benefits through plant community-based design strategies. Attendees will learn ecological gardening and maintenance practices that lead to a “greener” and more resilient garden. Case studies will shed light on how to minimize the environmental impact of humanmade landscapes ranging from home gardens to commercial projects. \n  \n5 CBLP CEUs will be available.

SUMMARY:Lewis Ginter Winter Symposium\, CVNLA Short Course
DESCRIPTION:“Uncertain Times\, Reliable Gardens” \nPresented by Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden\, Central Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association\, and Virginia Cooperative Extension \nJoin seasoned gardeners and green industry professionals to explore how concepts of beauty and order are changing based on deep research into how plants behave and how they are reacting to climate change.  the importance of native plants and an understanding of plant communities help designers and gardeners create more resilient gardens and contribute to the health of the biosphere in the face of climate change. \nContinuing education hours are offered for each day\, along with book sales and signings and opportunities to network with industry colleagues. Net proceeds from the three-day event help build CVNLA’s scholarship fund for students pursuing horticultural careers. \nTwo-day symposium\, plus one day for pesticide certification. \nUp to 15 CBLP CEUs are available (5 CEUs per day) \n

SUMMARY:New Directions in the American Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The Culture-Ecology Bond: Perspectives for Designers \nCulture and ecology exist in a dynamic\nrelationship: culture shapes ecology and vice\nversa. Our 2020 conference will explore this\nfeedback loop as it pertains to landscape design\nand management. From historical as well as\ncontemporary perspectives\, our presenters will\nconsider the complex\, sometimes overlooked\nways in which culture and ecology interact and\nwhat this means for how ecology-based design\ncan be most effective. \nRegister by December 16 for early (discounted) rate. \n12 CBLP CEUs will be available.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Investigating the Stormwater: Quantity and Quality Impacts of Urban Trees
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nBill Selbig\, USGS\nRebecca Dohn\, City of Nashville\n\nA community with dense overhead tree canopy may benefit from reduced stormwater runoff volume through interception\, transpiration\, and infiltration but may also suffer from excess nutrients leached to nearby receiving waters from leaf litter. Bill Selbig will highlight ongoing research to help managers assess stormwater volume reduction potential of urban trees as well as understand how municipal leaf collection and street cleaning programs can limit the amount of nutrients in stormwater runoff. Rebecca Dohn will share advances and challenges in the city of Nashville’s efforts to use its urban forest for post-construction water quality stormwater control\, including challenges to balancing credits for tree preservation with potential for post-construction tree mortality. \n1 CBLP CEU is available.

SUMMARY:Online Course: Landscaping for Resiliency in a Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:The Earth’s climate is changing. Impacts – including higher temperatures\, warming water temperatures\, rising sea levels\, and longer periods of extreme weather – are already being felt in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and are expected to worsen. The good news is there are actions we can all take to help mitigate and adapt to these impacts. Landscape professionals\, in particular\, have a unique opportunity to address the effects of our changing climate. This introductory course explains the difference between weather and climate\, and provides an overview of how human activities are contributing to the rapid and unprecedented pace of climate change. Specific impacts to the Chesapeake Bay watershed are covered along with sustainable landscape practices that can be used to help mitigate climate change and promote resilience\, including using native plants and trees\, designing for extreme precipitation\, and installing resilient stormwater BMPs to mitigate flooding and other impacts. The course ends with a description of climate impacts and landscaping strategies specific to the natural and built environments at the water’s edge. \nCBLP worked with the University of Maryland’s Municipal Online Stormwater Training (MOST) Center to develop the content for this course. \nThis interactive online course is FREE through February 2021. \nNote that the location for this course has changed as of April 1.  Please click the URL below to find the MOST center. \n2 CBLP CEUs are available.

SUMMARY:Hands On: Tree Planting in PA
DESCRIPTION:Get outdoors and get your “hands on CEUs” planting trees with Penn State or with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay this fall. \nUpland Tree Planting near Grantville\, Dauphin Co- October 26  9:00 AM to noon  \n       East Hanover Township is planting 300 trees throughout their park. The trees will help reduce township maintenance\, beautify the park while providing habitat for wildlife\, provide shade and help reduce stormwater runoff. \nTree planting in Lebanon – November 2\, 9:00 AM-Noon \nThe Creekside Homeowner’s Association planted a native meadow several years ago along Snitz Creek. On November 2 we will help them plant trees in the meadow to further improve habitat and protect the stream. SUMMARY:Invasive Plants Management: An Overview for Landscape Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Registration is Open! \nThis workshop is developed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Habitat Partners\, and is designed for certified CBLPs and other landscape professionals. \nInvasive plant species are highly detrimental to natural plant communities\, and their presence must be taken into consideration when designing a space for a client.  In this workshop we’ll describe invasive plant species that are most problematic; explain various methods for controlling them; show site characteristics that encourage the growth of invasives; and demonstrate the thought-process needed to troubleshoot invasive species in a case study area.  The training includes indoor instruction\, an outdoor field activity in small work-groups\, and a short design exercise that will be used to provide basic recommendations to the property owners. \nEarly registration is $75.  After September 13\, registration is $95. Lunch is included. \nCBLP CEUs will be available.

SUMMARY:Mid Atlantic Invasive Plant Conference
DESCRIPTION:The biology and ecology of invasive plants are a driving factor in their impacts on natural areas\, while past disturbance\, land use\, soils and other factors can strongly influence the success of restoration efforts. We will explore a variety of topics relating to invasion biology and restoration: impacts of invasive plants on whole ecosystems\, invasive plant management partnerships at multiple spatial scales\, the news in latest biocontrol\, and melding restoration with working landscapes. Additionally\, we will present two rapid-fire sessions of short\, 7-minute talks\, a Monday evening poster pub\, and field trips to local restoration sites. Plenty of time will be available for questions\, discussion\, and networking with speakers and attendees. \nUp to 10 CBLP CEUs are available.
