SUMMARY:Managing Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:Managing Invasive Plants will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to properly identify invasive plants and develop strategies for treatment and control. \nInvasive weeds and pests are a major threat to our natural and cultivated landscapes\, spreading quickly and displacing or killing native plants. Invasive species (plants\, insects\, and animals) are costing the United States more than $138 billion each year\, due to their economic impact on agriculture\, forestry\, fisheries\, waterways\, wildlife\, and ornamental landscapes. Ecologists now rank invasion by exotic plants\, animals and pathogens second only to habitat loss as a major threat to local biodiversity. \nA portion of the day will be spent in the field looking at invasive plants\, the results of management\, and a calibration demonstration.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Planning in the Wild-Urban Interface
DESCRIPTION:The wildland-urban interface (WUI) – the area where human development borders or intermingles with forests or other wildlands – has grown rapidly over the last several decades. The WUI is also the area where communities are at increased risk to wildfire. With more communities located partially or entirely within the WUI\, the need for planning guidance has become clear. In this webinar\, Miranda Mockrin will present data on national WUI extent and growth (1990-2010)\, sharing trends in WUI expansion and a national WUI dataset that planners and others can use for their work. Joe DeAngelis will introduce two recent publications from the American Planning Association that discuss the role of land use planning in community wildfire resilience. Molly Mowery will share community-based planning solutions from across the country that address current and future development in the WUI. Together\, the speakers will address what community planners\, urban foresters\, and other allied professions need to know to tackle WUI challenges. \nPresented by: \nMiranda Mockrin\, USDA Forest Service \nJoe DeAngelis\, American Planning Association \nMolly Mowery\, Wildfire Planning International \n 1 CBLP CEU is available.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Remediating Compacted Soils Compromised by Urban Construction
DESCRIPTION:Soils are inevitably compacted and regraded or paved over. We have developed  techniques that can remediate these  degraded soils and provide a long-term solution towards creating a sustainable landscape post construction. When paving is not involved\, we developed the ‘Scoop and Dump’ method soil remediation and have followed its effects over 12 years of practice\, measuring soil health and plant growth over the long term.  Briefly\, it involves incorporating   significant volumes of compost with a backhoe to create veins of compost for root growth and drainage in previously compacted  soil. Moreover\, this compost injection feeds the microorganisms which aid in soil aggregate formation the release of nutrients. This low impact solution to  improving degraded soils holds real promise to help green the urban environment. \nPresented by: \nDr. Nina Bassuk\, Cornell University \n1 CBLP CEU is available

SUMMARY:Webinar: Why Pollinator Habitat Makes Sense on Your Land: Maximizing the Potential of Working Acres
DESCRIPTION:It doesn’t take a lot of space to make valuable habitat for monarch butterflies\, pollinators\, and other beneficial insects that yields dividends for the agricultural landowner\, as well.  This webinar\, delivered by the Keystone Monarch Collaborative\, will make the economic and ecological case for establishing habitat adjacent to working farmland.  Seth’s research and Wayne’s in-field expertise match hard numbers with hard-earned experience to convey the realities of managing for beneficial insects.  They will point out several ways to get started\, from maximizing the potential already embedded in field margins to pairing conservation programs with precision ag technology.  Attendees can expect to leave with ways to access the locally specific resources they need to determine if habitat really does make sense on their land.  This is the first of two webinars with the Keystone Monarch Collaborative this summer for agricultural landowners and managers.  The second on July 23rd will dive into the trials and triumphs of those who have attempted to establish habitat plantings. \n  \nPresenters:   \n\nSeth Applegate\, Research Agronomist\, Iowa State University Monarch Research Team\nWayne Fredericks\, Board Member\, American Soybean Association\nJonathan Geurts\, Senior Policy Manager\, Keystone Policy Center\n\n  \nRegister:

SUMMARY:Native Meadows: Let's Get Real
DESCRIPTION:Demand for native meadows\, particularly as an alternative to lawn\, is increasing\, and yet few types of landscape plantings are more misunderstood\, with many failures resulting from inadequate planning and the use of poorly adapted plants.  Far better results can be obtained when the plants and processes used reflect the ecological character of our naturally occurring meadow communities.  More than one-year wonders\, meadows modeled on these ecosystems can provide long-term\, easily managed landscapes that harbor a myriad of wildlife and provide color and texture throughout the year.  In this all-day\, in-depth workshop\, Larry Weaner will discuss the design\, implementation\, and management of native meadows\, using a series of case studies featuring large and small-scale meadows\, as well as projects ranging in age from initial establishment to over ten years in existence.  He will also illustrate how garden design principles can be used in the meadow for subtle visual effect and to create graceful transitions to more formal garden areas. Lunch is included with registration fee. \nLarry Weaner has been creating native landscapes since 1977.  He founded Larry Weaner Landscape Associates in 1982 and has gained a national reputation for combining ecological restoration with the traditions of garden design. \nCBLP CEUs are available.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Green Readiness\, Response\, and Recovery: Stewardship of natural resources in the context of disturbance
DESCRIPTION:USDA Forest Service Urban Forest Connections Webinar Series \nMassive social-ecological disturbance and disasters have struck the United States in recent years. In 2017 alone\, the country dealt with devastation\, destruction\, and displacement from three major hurricanes\, a nearly unprecedented wildfire season\, and senseless acts of violence and terrorism. The magnitude of these disasters requires appropriate\, large-scale coordinated emergency response and recovery efforts. Both research and practice demonstrate that natural resource stewardship activities can play a role in helping communities to recover\, heal\, and become more resilient. This webinar presents perspectives from authors in the forthcoming Forest Service General Technical Report Green Readiness\, Response\, and Recovery: A Collaborative Synthesis. First\, Jonathan Halfon will reflect on how coordinated federal long-term recovery is evolving from a natural resource conservation perspective\, drawing on examples from recent disasters in New York\, the US Virgin Islands\, and Hawaii. Then\, Traci Sooter and Nancy Chikaraishi will share their experiences in designing community-based memorials in Joplin\, MO following the 2011 EF5 tornado. Lindsay Campbell will moderate a discussion about how communities can rebuild and create capacity over time through innovative partnerships centered on community-based stewardship of natural resources. \nPresented by: \nJonathan Halfon\, FEMA \nTraci Sooter & Nancy Chikaraishi\, Drury University \nLindsay Campbell\, USDA Forest Service \nWhere: Go to https://www.fs.fed.us/research/urban-webinars/connect.php \nFor more information: http://www.fs.fed.us/research/urban-webinars or contact the Urban Forest Technology & Science Delivery Team at urban@fs.fed.us with questions\, feedback\, requests for special accommodations\, speaker suggestions\, or to be added to the mailing list. \n1 CBLP CEU
