SUMMARY:Rain Check Contractor Training
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Prince George’s County’s Rain Check Program offers rebates to homeowners\, businesses and others to install best management practices (BMPs) intended to capture stormwater runoff? This training is designed to provide landscape professionals with practical hands on information on the seven Rain Check Rebate practices and processes. Special emphasis is placed on rain gardens\, pavement removal and permeable pavement. \nThis all-day training teaches landscape professionals how to plan\, design\, construct and maintain Rain Check Rebate practices. Classroom exercises provide guidance on practice selection\, site assessment and site selection. After completion of the classroom training\, participants are eligible to sign up for Day 2\, which will be a field day to further hone their skills and help install or assess stormwater BMPs. Participants who successfully complete both presentations (classroom training + field day) will be added to the County’s public list of landscape professionals who have completed the Rain Check Rebate Contractor Training. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Specifying\, Selecting\, and Planting High Quality Trees
DESCRIPTION:Tree quality and proper planting are key elements influencing survival\, establishment\, long-term health\, and maintenance needs.  However\, many trees delivered to your planting site may be sub-standard or poor quality or they may be planted incorrectly. This presentation will define ‘quality’ as it relates to trees and will focus on the steps necessary to produce\, identify\, and plant high-quality trees. Myths and realities of tree care and planting are reviewed including tree fertilization\, proper methods of staking and guying\, and the best approaches for pruning young trees to encourage proper development.  You will learn how to draft and enforce planting specifications\, evaluate the condition of root systems and branching structure to ensure that you purchase and receive high quality plants\, and how to interpret industry standards and best management practices. This course is designed for landscape business owners and foremen\, landscape architects\, arborists\, people who plant trees\, and others who are responsible for signing and fulfilling planting contracts. \nFee:  $140 (includes lunch) \nRegistration and more information: bit.ly/MorrisSOA or call (215)247-5777 x125 \nCBLP CEUs are available.

SUMMARY:Webinar: AWE’s Outdoor Water Savings Research Initiative: Accelerating the Landscape Transformation
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) WaterSense® program and the Alliance for Water Efficiency invite you to join a free webinar\, Accelerating the Landscape Transformation. \nAs indoor water use continues to drop\, the conservation community must turn our full attention to the next untapped opportunity for water savings – outdoor water use efficiency programs. Mary Ann Dickinson\, President and CEO of the Alliance for Water Efficiency\, and project team members Dr. Thomas Chesnutt (A&N Technical Services\, Inc.) and Maureen Erbeznik (Maureen Erbeznik & Associates) will present on the Alliance’s forthcoming Landscape Transformation study. This study\, the first research product of AWE’s Outdoor Water Savings Research Initiative\, represents the most expansive and diverse assessment of utility outdoor programs to date. The presentation will share findings from an Impact Analysis conducted of utility program data from municipalities throughout the United States and Canada and a Process Evaluation consisting of customer surveys\, interviews\, and market analysis. Water managers\, irrigation professionals\, and anyone involved in residential landscape management will leave with critical insights to design utility programs that successfully accelerate our transition from high-water use landscape designs to sustainable landscapes that support homeowner goals\, community water objectives\, and healthy watersheds. \nRegistration is required. \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Salt Dilemma: Growing Better Urban Trees in Northern Climates
DESCRIPTION:Can urban trees and city winter weather protocols peacefully co-exist? Join us for a discussion of the latest research findings related to successfully growing trees under these conditions. Dr. Andrew Millward will walk us through his investigation of the surprising decline and mortality of trees planted using soil cells in a recent urban revitalization project in Toronto. While the research led to salt\, there were a number of other factors. The project opened a discussion about changes to the way we design and manage urban trees. Adam Nicklin will offer options to reduce salt damage to trees\, and talk about the role landscape architects can play in helping the urban canopy thrive. \nPresented by: \nJames Urban\, FASLA\, Urban Tree + Soil \nAndrew Millward\, PhD\, Ryerson University \nAdam Nicklin\, PUBLIC WORK \nRegistration and connection details: https://treefund.org/webinars \n  \n1 CBLP CEU

DESCRIPTION:What do you do with too much water\, too quickly?  How much water is your site getting?  How do you manage all that water with grace and beauty? \nRain Gardens and other small-scale stormwater best management practices (BMPs) pose two major challenges in their design:  knowing how much water the site must handle\, and managing that water while still looking attractive. \nThe Virginia Society of Landscape Designers invites designers and other green industry professionals to participate in a day of lecture and guided exercises exploring the aesthetics and site analysis behind successful small-scale stormwater BMPs. \nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nDr. Eliza Pennypacker\,    Dr. Stuart Echols\nKeynote speakers; The Aesthetics of Stormwater Management\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Sonne\nCalculating Stormwater In-Flow\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirginia Rockwell\nTools for Analyzing Soils in the Field\n\n\n\n  \nIn addition\, those registering for the February 2 seminar are invited to participate in a tour (on Friday Feb. 1\, before the seminar) of a rain garden which will be used in exercises offered during the seminar.  Registrants will receive more information upon registration. \nBoxed lunch and light breakfast provided with registration \nCBLP CEUs will be available.

SUMMARY:Webinar: More Than Good Looks: How trees influence urban stormwater management in green infrastructure practices
DESCRIPTION:Subject to cancellation due to federal government shutdown. \nWhile green stormwater infrastructure increases in popularity\, we are still learning about the role of trees in these innovative practices. In this webinar\, Andrew Tirpak will discuss recent research results from studies designed to characterize the health of trees in bioretention practices and the benefits they provide to urban stormwater management. Lyn Rutherford will share observations from managing bioretention and detention ponds\, noting how design\, installation\, and maintenance practices affect tree health and water quality function. This information can help stormwater engineers\, urban foresters\, and landscape professionals be successful in integrating trees into stormwater management efforts. \nPresented by: \nAndrew Tirpak\, University of Tennessee \nLyn Rutherford\, City of Chattanooga\, TN \nFor more information: http://www.fs.fed.us/research/urban-webinars or contact the Urban Forest Technology & Science Delivery Team at urban@fs.fed.us with questions\, feedback\, requests for special accommodations\, speaker suggestions\, or to be added to the mailing list. \n1 CBLP CEU is available
