SUMMARY:Webinar: More Than Good Looks: How trees influence urban stormwater management in green infrastructure practices
DESCRIPTION:Subject to cancellation due to federal government shutdown. \nWhile green stormwater infrastructure increases in popularity\, we are still learning about the role of trees in these innovative practices. In this webinar\, Andrew Tirpak will discuss recent research results from studies designed to characterize the health of trees in bioretention practices and the benefits they provide to urban stormwater management. Lyn Rutherford will share observations from managing bioretention and detention ponds\, noting how design\, installation\, and maintenance practices affect tree health and water quality function. This information can help stormwater engineers\, urban foresters\, and landscape professionals be successful in integrating trees into stormwater management efforts. \nPresented by: \nAndrew Tirpak\, University of Tennessee \nLyn Rutherford\, City of Chattanooga\, TN \nFor more information: http://www.fs.fed.us/research/urban-webinars or contact the Urban Forest Technology & Science Delivery Team at urban@fs.fed.us with questions\, feedback\, requests for special accommodations\, speaker suggestions\, or to be added to the mailing list. \n1 CBLP CEU is available

SUMMARY:DESIGNING WITH INTENTIONALITY THE CHARLES F. GILLETTE FORUM ON LANDSCAPE DESIGN
DESCRIPTION:In this year’s Gillette Forum\, we gather to discuss our growing and altered understanding of how to shape the land to honor natural processes\, to create meaningful places that are healthy for humans and the natural world.  We act with intentionality to embrace and explore solutions to contemporary and social issues. \nLandscape architects and designers now see that actions once considered separate and apart from natural processes are anything but. The contemporary act of design gathers the multiple threads of diversity and applies process and creativity to make meaningful places. \n5 CBLP CEUs are available

SUMMARY:Tree Canopy Conference: Science\, Practice\, Culture
DESCRIPTION:Join your colleagues as we take a deeper look into the changing nature of the urban forest and discover some new options for successful canopy care. Our regional tree canopy grows and is supported by our knowledge\, practice\, and culture\, as well as the impulse of nature itself. This conference explores how well some common tree care practices match up with the science. There are lessons on how to become more effective advocates as well as practitioners. \nCBLP CEUs are available.

SUMMARY:Tree ID for CBLPs
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT.  To be placed on a waiting list\, please contact beth@cblpro.org \n  \nThe morning is spent in the classroom working on our tree ID skills. We’ll go outdoors in the afternoon\, honing our ID skills in lovely Sandy Spring. \nWe’ll use a combination of lecture\, individual study\, and team activities to build our powers of observation and comparison\, on fresh samples of tree twigs and leaves. This is a beginners’ class\, designed to help people who’ve either never studied woody plant ID\, or who have studied it and it “didn’t stick\,” or those who would like a refresher.  Accordingly\, we’ll limit our focus to a dozen species\, but the reference book\, combined with skills you acquire in class will allow you to identify the majority of Maryland’s trees. \nRegistration includes a copy of the reference booklet: \nWatts\, M. T. (1963\, 1991\, Rev 1998). Tree Finder: A Manual for the Identification of Trees by their Leaves.  Nature Study Guild Publishers\, Rochester\, NY. (ISBN 978-0912550015) \nInstructor \nDr. Sara Tangren (University of Maryland Extension) is a specialist in sustainable landscaping and native plants. Sara worked for many years as a certified forest stand delineator\, and has surveyed and developed conservation plans for hundreds of acres of Maryland forest. She sits on the advisory board of the University of Maryland Arboretum & Botanical Garden. \n4.5 CBLP CEUs

SUMMARY:Know Your Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:Invasive plants that kill or bring down mature trees can seriously alter stream health and ecosystem function. Volunteer Master Naturalist Diyan Rahaman will help you identify non-native invasive plants at Woodend and in nearby Rock Creek Park. An ANS/Rock Creek Conservancy Partnership. \nFor 25 years\, ANS has been teaching the natural history of aquatic ecology and training volunteer stream monitors who track the health of our region’s streams. Learn from the experts: study stream science in our introductory classes\, and you just might be inspired to become a stream monitor yourself! Our advanced classes are perfect for those interested in deepening their knowledge about biological stream monitoring and are taught by our Maryland Biological Stream Survey-certified instructor Cathy Wiss. Our classes are great for fly fishermen\, citizen science program or team leaders\, aquatic resource biologists\, and anyone interested in monitoring and understanding stream health. \nCBLP CEUs are available.

SUMMARY:Maryland Native Plant Society Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Times They Are A’Changin’: Threats to Maryland’s Native Plant Communities\nCo-sponsored by the Department of Geography and Environmental Systems at University of Maryland Baltimore County and the Mid-Atlantic Invasive Plant Council \nThis year’s conference will highlight two of the major threats to Maryland’s natural communities — invasive species and climate change — and remind us that\, without intervention\, our native biota will continue to decline and disappear. Speakers will address these threats\, as well as actions that could reduce them. In addition\, we will celebrate our native plants and communities with field trips to remarkable natural areas in the region. \nCBLP CEUs will be available.
