SUMMARY:Tree ID for CBLPs
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED FOR THIS EVENT.  To be placed on a waiting list\, please contact beth@cblpro.org \n  \nThe morning is spent in the classroom working on our tree ID skills. We’ll go outdoors in the afternoon\, honing our ID skills in lovely Sandy Spring. \nWe’ll use a combination of lecture\, individual study\, and team activities to build our powers of observation and comparison\, on fresh samples of tree twigs and leaves. This is a beginners’ class\, designed to help people who’ve either never studied woody plant ID\, or who have studied it and it “didn’t stick\,” or those who would like a refresher.  Accordingly\, we’ll limit our focus to a dozen species\, but the reference book\, combined with skills you acquire in class will allow you to identify the majority of Maryland’s trees. \nRegistration includes a copy of the reference booklet: \nWatts\, M. T. (1963\, 1991\, Rev 1998). Tree Finder: A Manual for the Identification of Trees by their Leaves.  Nature Study Guild Publishers\, Rochester\, NY. (ISBN 978-0912550015) \nInstructor \nDr. Sara Tangren (University of Maryland Extension) is a specialist in sustainable landscaping and native plants. Sara worked for many years as a certified forest stand delineator\, and has surveyed and developed conservation plans for hundreds of acres of Maryland forest. She sits on the advisory board of the University of Maryland Arboretum & Botanical Garden. \n4.5 CBLP CEUs

SUMMARY:Know Your Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:Invasive plants that kill or bring down mature trees can seriously alter stream health and ecosystem function. Volunteer Master Naturalist Diyan Rahaman will help you identify non-native invasive plants at Woodend and in nearby Rock Creek Park. An ANS/Rock Creek Conservancy Partnership. \nFor 25 years\, ANS has been teaching the natural history of aquatic ecology and training volunteer stream monitors who track the health of our region’s streams. Learn from the experts: study stream science in our introductory classes\, and you just might be inspired to become a stream monitor yourself! Our advanced classes are perfect for those interested in deepening their knowledge about biological stream monitoring and are taught by our Maryland Biological Stream Survey-certified instructor Cathy Wiss. Our classes are great for fly fishermen\, citizen science program or team leaders\, aquatic resource biologists\, and anyone interested in monitoring and understanding stream health. \nCBLP CEUs are available.

SUMMARY:Woodland & Wildlife Webinar: Status of Emerald Ash Borer in Maryland & Potential for Impact to Tidal Hardwood Swamps
DESCRIPTION:Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)\, an invasive insect from Asia\, continues to decimate ash trees in more than 30 U.S. states. It has recently expanded to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. \nPlease join us for a one-hour webinar\, hosted by the University of Maryland Extension\, on Tuesday\, August 7th from 12 PM to 1 PM Eastern\, which will provide an update on the status of EAB in Maryland for woodland owners\, land trusts\, local government officials\, pesticide professionals and others interested in EAB. \nSince the emerald ash borer was detected in August 2003 in southern Maryland\, it has spread across the state\, decimating ash trees and forests. There are now concerns about it potential impact in tidal hardwood swamps around the Chesapeake Bay\, which have not yet seen significant mortality. \nTwo speakers will address the EAB issue in Maryland. Colleen Kenny\, EAB Coordinator with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources\, will give an overview of EAB status in the state and efforts to control it with injections and natural predators. \nJonathan Kays\, Extension Forester with the University of Maryland Extension will discuss a case study of mortality of an ash-dominated tidal hardwood swamp along the Patuxent River. Ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) are the single dominant tree species of many tidal freshwater-forested wetlands on the U.S. Atlantic coast\, including those of Chesapeake Bay. Along the US Atlantic coast\, there are 220 square miles (141\,000 acres) of ash-dominated tidal forest\, with more than half (102\,000 acres or 160 square miles) occurring in the three Chesapeake Bay states of Maryland\, Delaware\, and Virginia. These wetlands are critically important for the services they provide and if widespread mortality occurs it will have significant environmental impacts. Recommendations and strategies to address the issue will be discussed. \nPlease register in advance. \n1 CBLP CEU is available.
