SUMMARY:Healthy Trees\, Healthy People
DESCRIPTION:Healthy Trees\, Healthy People is a two-day program featuring presentations on the link between human health and community forest health\, as well as information essential to the care of community trees. It is a great opportunity to share ideas with shade tree commissioners\, foresters\, arborists\, and others. \nThe first day will take us outside to explore examples of the role of community forests in contributing to healthy communities. During this afternoon field trip\, we will see an urban tree nursery’s efforts to develop healthy and genetically diverse trees\, the impacts of oak wilt on tree canopy in a city park\, and how active neighborhood volunteers organized to care for their street trees. The field trip will wrap up with a visit to a furniture workshop to see how reclaimed urban wood is being transformed into fine furniture. The second day will feature a variety of presentations on tree health\, its impacts on communities\, and ways to plan and manage the community forest to ensure success. \nCBLP CEUs will be available.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Designing a Downtown Fit for Trees
DESCRIPTION:Penn State Extension Community Forestry Management Monthly Webinar Series \nGrowing trees in a downtown commercial setting can be a major challenge when you consider they need room to grow (including rooting space); not block signs\, delivery trucks or pedestrians; must tolerate salt and heat; and can’t make a mess by dropping fruit or flowers. Join the webinar and learn how good design\, site preparation\, and species selection can solve many of those issues without resorting to planting plastic trees in your downtown.  \nPresented by: \nVincent Cotrone\, Urban Forester\, Penn State Extension \nRegistration and connection details: Register at https://psu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_04XjkzNkS8ywyuZDqSUQRQ \nWe have switched to a new webinar platform called Zoom. Use the link above to register for the webinar early\, or at the time of the webinar. If you register prior to the webinar\, you will receive an email with a link to access the webinar. If you register at the time of the webinar\, you will be connected directly to the webinar following registration. We recommend registering and accessing the webinar room 15 minutes prior to the webinar start time to ensure you are able to connect. If this is your first time using the Zoom platform\, follow the onscreen prompts to download and run the Zoom plug-in to get connected. For more information on attending webinars via the Zoom platform\, click here to visit a help page. \nContinuing Education Credits: One Continuing Education Credit for Landscape Architects; Society of American Foresters (CFEs); and PLNA Certified Horticulturalist (PCH) will be offered to attendees. One CEU for International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborists will be awarded with 80% or higher score on webinar quiz. Certificates of attendance will be provided after the program. \nFor more information contact Scott Sjolander at 814-350-7749 or sas305@psu.edu \n1 CBLP CEU is available

SUMMARY:Webinar: Emerald Ash Borer Cooperative Management: Ideal and In-practice
DESCRIPTION:USDA Forest Service Urban Forest Connections Webinar Series \nThe emerald ash borer (EAB) is one of the most economically and environmentally damaging invasive species to reach the United States. Economic damage of EAB is most severe in cities that lose abundant high-value ash trees growing along streets and in yards. Pest management and economic models suggest that a landscape level approach across all ownerships\, including surveillance for early detection\, treatment of ash trees with systemic insecticides\, and removal of infested ash trees\, yields the greatest benefits at the lowest costs. While individual cities can develop EAB management plans that include these measures on public lands\, they cannot manage beyond their borders and may not realize maximum benefit. In this webinar\, Robert Haight will present research on the economics of ash treatment and removal strategies and the potential gains in social welfare from the ideal cooperation among city governments and private residents. Based on years of experience\, Jeff Hafner will describe barriers to direct cooperation among cities and practices that professional arborists can use to overcome those barriers. He will share examples of management plans and agreements that he has brokered among cities and private residents in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. \nPresented by: \nRobert Haight\, USDA Forest Service \nJeff Hafner\, Rainbow Treecare \nWhere: Go to https://usfs.adobeconnect.com/ucf/ \nFor more information: Contact the Urban Forest Technology & Science Delivery Team at urban@fs.fed.us with questions\, feedback\, requests for special accommodations\, speaker suggestions\, or to be added to the mailing list.

SUMMARY:Green Matters Symposium
DESCRIPTION:How can we design our landscapes in ways that prevent harm to existing ecosystems AND regenerate the environment? We live in an age when the most effective progress on protecting the environment will likely occur at the local level. Join a broad spectrum of actors from home gardeners to professionals in the horticulture and landscape architecture industries to learn how we can be proactive stewards of our own piece of the pie. \nThis symposium helps shift the focus beyond sustainability strategies geared towards slowing environmental degradation by emphasizing solutions that heal our damaged urban landscapes. Learn from experts about regenerative landscape design and gardening practices that help restore our ecosystems on both small and large scales. Presentations will also explore how we adapt strategies for climate resiliency aimed at preparing our landscapes to absorb stresses and maintain functionality in the face of future climate change impacts. \nUp to 5 CBLP CEUs are available for this course.

SUMMARY:Building Nature From Scratch
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn Bridge Park\, an 85 acre\, man-made landscape constructed on abandoned piers in the New York harbor\, was created with ecology in mind. The park’s award-winning piers support top-notch recreation\, from opera to outdoor films\, all of it beautifully designed. But the piers also contain native woodlands\, freshwater wetlands\, salt marshes\, and numerous meadows. These landscapes closely mimic native ecosystems and are managed with an emphasis on wildlife habitat. Rebecca presents many of the strategies employed in designing the park as well as the organically based management practices that promote biodiverse parklands. \nRebecca McMackin is an ecologically obsessed horticulturist and garden designer. She is the Director of Horticulture at Brooklyn Bridge Park where she oversees meadows\, wetlands\, forest\, and ornamental beds with the aim of encouraging biodiversity. Her writing has been published in The New York Times and Landscape Institute. In her scarce free time\, she designs gardens for Mantis Plant Works that are both beautiful and ecologically robust. \nCBLP CEUs: 1
