Aquatic invasive plants are plants that have been introduced into the United States from other parts of the world and have adapted to growing in\, around\, or near water. They are a growing concern in Virginia and beyond\, on both private and public lands. Our guest panel will provide some background about aquatic invasives\, how they are a problem\, and methods for managing them. The panel will then take questions from the audience. If you are able\, please submit your questions beforehand during registration. We will also answer some questions live from the audience. \nThis is a free online webinar. Those who register will receive a copy of the recording. \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:Water Cooler Talk: Eliminating Barriers to Green Stormwater Infrastructure Implementation (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Municipal land development regulations can present barriers to the widespread use of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI)\, such as rain gardens\, bioswales\, naturalized stormwater basins\, and tree trenches. GSI practices can improve water quality by incorporating nature-based practices that slow and infiltrate stormwater where it falls. This Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) presentation will summarize an auditing tool used to evaluate local development regulations to identify and overcome barriers to implementing GSI. Working closely with municipal officials\, PEC conducted audits of land development ordinances in the southeast Pennsylvania area and identified barriers to using GSI in stormwater\, zoning\, subdivision\, and land development ordinances. Recommendations were provided to participating municipalities on updating ordinances to enable “by right” applications of GSI practices. PEC will summarize this GSI audit work\, including an approach under development to conduct streamlined audits that focus on the more commonly identified GSI barriers. \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:All About Callery Pear (online)
DESCRIPTION:Join Blue Ridge PRISM via Zoom for our Spring Meeting when we welcome David Coyle as our speaker. Callery pear is one of the most rapidly spreading invasive plants in the eastern United States and often stems from cultivars of ornamental pears (most commonly the Bradford pear). Doug Tallamy calls the Callery pear one of the worst threats to our forests. \nDr. Coyle will do a deep dive into this problematic species and will have a Q&A with the audience at the end of his presentation. \nA recognized expert on forest health and invasive species\, Dr. Coyle will take us through the history of Callery pear\, how and why it got to the United States\, and its current infestation status. He will talk about the applied research he’s done to demonstrate ecological impacts as well as discuss some management strategies that do (and do not) work to mitigate and manage its spread. \nWe are excited to offer this opportunity to spend some time with Dr. Coyle who has been instrumental in spearheading Bradford pear bounties in South Carolina. On October 1\, 2024\, South Carolina will become only the second state in the United States to ban the nursery sale of Bradford pear trees and any other pear trees grown on the commonly used Pyrus calleryana rootstock. \nYou can read more about Professor Coyle’s work in this New York Times article:\nhttps://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/26/us/bradford-pear-tree-south-carolina.html \nThis is a free online event and includes a question & answer period with the audience. Those who register will receive access to the recording. \n1.5 CBLP CEUs

SUMMARY:GreenScapes Symposium: Designing with Purpose (online)
DESCRIPTION:Whether a gardener living in the suburbs or a landscape architect developing commercial projects\, we all design with specific purposes in mind. This symposium will offer design strategies to achieve a range of goals\, from public gardens that engage diverse audiences to landscapes that reduce carbon footprints and are resilient to climate change. Speakers will also explore innovative design and maintenance practices that bring visual order to naturalistic gardens and make them more palatable to neighbors and HOAs. Though these landscape goals may seem unrelated\, they can all be achieved by selecting the right building materials\, understanding plant communities\, and leveraging creative plant combinations. \nFeatured topics and speakers include:\n• Quest for Climate Resiliency: Adaptive Strategies for Sustainable Plant Design – Laura Hansplant\, landscape architect and co-owner at Studio Sustena\n• On This Land: Connecting Minority Communities to the Natural World\nVeronica Tyson-Strait\, landscape designer\, educator\, artist and Horticulture Manager at Randall’s Island Park Alliance\n• Unlawning Suburbia: Lessons in the Design and Management of Nature-Inspired Landscapes – Benjamin Vogt\, Author & Owner\, Monarch Gardens\n• Soak it up: Carbon Sequestering Sites – Pamela Conrad\, landscape architect\, founder of Climate Positive Design\, and current Loeb Fellow\, Harvard Graduate School of Design \n5 CBLP CEUs
