Having served as Director of Environmental Stewardship at Glenstone since 2010\, Paul helped to create a “living classroom” on the all-organic 300-acre site that includes native meadows\, a five-acre organic lawn\, restored streams and tributaries\, forests and more than 12\,000 recently planted native trees.  \n  \nWinner of the prestigious Communicator of the Year Award from the American Horticultural Society\, as well as the 2018 Green Medal Award from the Garden Writers of America\, Paul has been featured in thousands of media outlets from Martha Stewart and Good Morning America as well as National Geographic\, Readers Digest and the New York Times\, which called him\, “The godfather of the natural land care movement.”  His books include the Organic Lawn Care Manual (Storey 2007). His 2010 feature-length documentary film titled\, “A Chemical Reaction\,” profiling the lawn pesticide bans sweeping across Canada and the U.S.\, earned three EMMY nominations. ​ \n​ \nAdele Kuo is the founder of Deco Footprint\, a full-service landscape company blendin architecture and landscapes into livable\, enjoyable spaces. also serves on the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council (CCLC) Board of Directors\, co-chairs the Development Committee\, and is a certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP) Level 1 & 2\, and VA Living Shorelines. She holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Landscape Design from The George Washington University and a BA from the University of Virginia. Adele shared her passion for living a more sustainable lifestyle by researching\, writing\, and reporting “It’s Easy Being Green” featured on Arlington Weekly News from 2011 to 2019.  You can view it on YouTube. \n\nNeal Beasley​ \nNeal Beasley is a licensed Landscape Architect\, Certified Arborist and Virginia Certified Horticulturist with significant project management experience both in the field and as a design consultant. Neal is currently a Senior Project Manager with Timmons Group\, a multi-disciplinary site design firm headquartered in Richmond\, VA and approaching his 20th year with Timmons. Formerly the Manager of Horticulture at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond\, VA\, during the largest garden expansion period\, Neal brings years of construction and landscape management into the design community focusing on project coordination\, elaborate planting design\, site lighting\, irrigation and administering construction support services for municipal\, recreational\, residential\, and commercial properties. \n  \nNeal has been a VNLA Board Member since 2019 and chairs the Virginia Certified Horticulturist program. Most recently\, he has represented the industry\, participating in strategic planning for and supporting state agencies dealing with managing invasive plant species. SUMMARY:Today's Menu: Chesapeake Bay Watershed Data Dashboard: An Introduction and How To Guide
DESCRIPTION:The Chesapeake Watershed Data Dashboard is an online tool that provides accessibility and visualization of data and technical information that can help guide water quality and watershed planning efforts. A large amount of scientific and technical information is available on the Dashboard for environmental managers and planners at both state and local levels. Much of this information has been updated or newly generated in recent years and can inform watershed restoration plan development and implementation. This presentation will include an overview of the Dashboard\, a live demonstration\, and time for questions/discussion. \nKaylyn Gootman has been with the Chesapeake Bay Program Office since 2022 as an Integrated Analysis Coordinator with the Science\, Analysis\, and Implementation Branch where she direct the efforts of multi-disciplinary teams in the development\, maintenance and updating of electronic Chesapeake Bay watershed information; coordinates Chesapeake Bay restoration and protection data analysis and interpretation activities from multiple sources and partners; serves as a technical lead for the development of computerized systems in support of continued integrated analysis of model simulated inputs/outputs of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem; develops and provides training on a full array of community-based environmental models\, data analysis\, and diagnostic tools used in the generation of Chesapeake Bay restoration and protection information; and shares scientific information via a variety of communication methods. \n1 CBLP CEU

DESCRIPTION:Green roofs are an important tool in reducing the negative impacts of stormwater on our local streams and rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. In the Washington\, DC region\, local governments require green roofs on some new construction\, and several municipal programs encourage the implementation of green roofs\, but many roofs are not well-managed once installed. In this course\, we focus on how to effectively design an aesthetically pleasing urban buffer that overcomes these challenges while helping meet water quality and habitat restoration goals. This interactive three-part workshop will combine online learning with an optional field trip to one of three sites in Virginia. Participants will then work collaboratively in small groups to develop a design for an urban buffer. DESCRIPTION:Volunteers Needed: Installation of Living Shoreline Oyster Sill – Multiple Days; May 8-July 10\, 2025 – Hampton\, VA – Volunteer to help install a 1\,000 foot living shoreline oyster sill along the Hampton River. \nJoin the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) for the installation of a 1\,000-linear-foot living shoreline oyster sill at Pine Cone Harbour Condominiums along the Hampton River. This part of the project will involve placing 4\,692 oyster castles\, 720 bushels of recycled oyster shells\, 650 Natrx Basalt Shell Bags\, and 22 coconut fiber coir logs\, each measuring 12 feet by 16 inches. \nThe Pine Cone Harbour Living Shoreline project represents the first collaboration between the CBF’s Hampton Roads Oyster Team and the Urban Restoration Team. Both teams are implementing projects directly offshore from one another. This partnership ensures that all habitats along the tidal slope\, from subtidal areas to the riparian buffer\, are considered as an integrated whole. By addressing these ecosystems comprehensively and viewing each section as part of a larger mosaic\, the project aims to achieve effective implementation and lasting improvements in water quality. \nA special thanks to the Blocker Foundation for supporting this work! \nRegister one day or several days. SUMMARY:MNPS Monthly Program: Uncommon to Rare Apiaceae in Maryland with Rod Simmons
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rod Simmons \nYOU MUST REGISTER IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE ZOOM LINK \nZoom opens at 7:00PM for pre-program board update and member Q&A. Presentations begin at 7:30PM and generally run until 8:45PM. \nA diversity of now-threatened Apiaceae occurs in Maryland\, with many restricted to particular physiographic regions and habitats. Rod Simmons\, plant ecologist and MNPS Board member\, will give a presentation on a variety of uncommon to rare Apiaceae in Maryland and vicinity\, especially regarding their associated natural communities and habitats. Identification will also be discussed. \nRod is a plant ecologist and conservation biologist\, with a background in biology\, botany\, and geology who has extensively surveyed the flora and natural communities of the mid-Atlantic region\, especially the inner Coastal Plain\, Fall Zone\, and Piedmont of the greater Washington\, D.C. area. He is a Research Associate with the National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution; a member of the Virginia Botanical Associates; former contract botanist for NatureServe\, National Park Service\, and others; and works closely with the Virginia and Maryland natural heritage programs. He is the author of numerous technical reports\, papers\, and articles\, and has published in scientific journals. He is a member and a past president of the Botanical Society of Washington and serves on the boards of the Virginia and Maryland native plant societies. He is a frequent lecturer and field trip leader for various organizations. He recently retired as Natural Resource Manager and Plant Ecologist for the City of Alexandria\, Virginia. \nWe can accommodate the first 300 people who enter the Zoom meeting at the meeting time.
