SUMMARY:Live Staking 101 Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Live Staking is a fast\, efficient\, affordable way to plant trees and shrubs on streambanks and other wet environments. Whether used as a primary method for reforesting an area\, as a streambank stabilization practice\, or simply to increase native vegetative diversity\, live staking is a great tool for conservation professionals\, volunteers\, and landowners alike. Join Rob Frank and Ryan Davis of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to learn everything you need to know about live staking\, from the biological mechanisms that allow us to propagate plants this way to standard techniques and identification tips for the top live staking species. \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:2022 VOLUNTEER TREE PLANTING RELAY
DESCRIPTION:24-HOUR VOLUNTEER TREE PLANTING RELAY A.K.A. TREELAY\nEvery year\, the Alliance engages communities\, companies\, and conservationists to plant thousands of trees in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. We’ve been looking for a big\, bold way to celebrate the fantastic tree planting efforts of our volunteers. Hence\, The 24-Hour Volunteer Tree Planting Relay also known as Treelay for short. Treelay is a series of volunteer tree plantings scheduled back-to-back over a 24-hour period (hence the relay). \nThe Alliance’s 2022 Treelay is in its inaugural year\, and we plan to kick things off with a bang! We will have nearly 10 plantings throughout the watershed: 6 plantings around the clock in Pennsylvania\, and one planting each hosted by our teams in Maryland and Washington\, DC. \nPENNSYLVANIA \n\n6 PM to 10 PM October 28th – Lancaster County\, PA – 400 trees to plant (25 volunteer spots available)\n10 PM October 28th to 2 AM October 29th – York County\, PA – 300 trees to plant (20 volunteer spots available)\n2 AM to 6 AM October 29th – Lancaster County\, PA – 185 trees to plant (25 volunteer spots available)\n6 AM to 10 AM October 29th – Lancaster County\, PA – 495 trees to plant (35 volunteer spots available)\n10 AM to 2 PM October 29th – Cumberland County\, PA – 1\,375 trees to plant (100 volunteer spots available)\n2 PM to 6 PM October 29th – Adams County\, PA – 1\,560 trees to plant (100 volunteer spots available)\n\nMARYLAND SITES \n\n8 AM to 12 PM October 29th – Carroll County\, MD – 600 trees to plant (30 volunteers spots available)\n\nWASHINGTON\, DC SITES \n\n12 PM to 2 PM October 29th – Washington\, DC – 10 trees to plant (10 volunteer spots available)

SUMMARY:Chesapeake Watershed Forum (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The year 2025 marks a historic milestone for the Chesapeake Bay watershed restoration movement. The 2010 Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) set forth necessary nitrogen\, phosphorus\, and sediment reduction targets in a pollution diet that will achieve a level of bay health meeting the survival\, growth\, and reproduction needs of its living resources. The TMDL aims to have the seven jurisdictions put in place by 2025 all the best management practices necessary to provide\, over time\, the reductions in nitrogen\, phosphorus\, and sediment that will improve bay water quality so that it meets all its applicable dissolved oxygen\, water clarity and chlorophyll related water quality standards. We have made notable progress in implementing the necessary actions that will result in pollution reductions leading to a healthy bay – however\, there is still much work to be done in the next four years. \nThrough our theme\, we consider the dualistic priorities of our time. Many of the best practices and approaches in agriculture\, stormwater\, and forestry that will get us to our 2025 goals are already out there. The challenge is how do we disseminate and implement these practices and approaches efficiently\, rapidly\, and at scale by 2025\, and how do we sustain the effectiveness of those efforts beyond 2025. \n

SUMMARY:Native Bees 101 (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Did you know there are over 400 different native bee species within Pennsylvania that help pollinate all of our flowering plants? \nJoin Rebecca Lauver\, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s Chesapeake Conservation Corps Member\, on March 18\, 2021 at 6:30PM to learn more native bee facts like this! Rebecca is hosting a FREE interactive webinar all about native bees! Consider joining her to learn about the diversity of native bee genera within Pennsylvania – although this knowledge can be applied across the entire Chesapeake Bay watershed. Rebecca will also provide introductory information on native bee lifestyles\, nutrient needs\, and morphology. There will be an emphasis on the current pressures facing native bees and how we can best help them. \nFor those who live near Lancaster County\, Pennsylvania\, there will be the opportunity to sign up to receive a native plant kit that features a bee “hotel” and native plants like milkweed\, goldenrod\, and mountain mint.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity: PA Riparian Rangers
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is looking for volunteers in Pennsylvania for their Riparian Ranger Program. Participants will “adopt” a riparian buffer and help to monitor and tend to recently planted trees. This will include tasks like straightening tree tubes\, fixing bird nets\, removing weeds\, monitoring invasives\, and helping to replant any trees that die. Training and supplies will all be provided. This is a great opportunity to support local watershed restoration efforts and greatly increase tree survivorship on riparian buffers. Additional information is included in the attached document. If you are interested or have any questions\, fill out the form linked here or email riparianrangers@allianceforthebay.org. \nYou may use volunteer buffer maintenance for your CBLP year 1 Hands On CEU requirement (min 6 hours)

SUMMARY:Chesapeake Watershed Forum
DESCRIPTION:Registration opens on August 24. \nThe Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s 15th Annual Chesapeake Watershed Forum (to be held online October 29 – 30) is a watershed-wide event reaching over 400 restoration and protection practitioners to inspire and empower local action towards clean water. We share successful tools and techniques\, offer lessons and learnings from on-the-ground work\, build capacities of local organizations\, foster partnerships\, educate on new initiatives and emerging practices\, network among each other\, and celebrate our successes. \nThrough our theme\, “Climate Resiliency in a Changing Chesapeake Watershed\,” we share our responses to the changing climatic and sea level conditions that alter the natural and human systems of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. We seek to highlight restoration and conservation approaches and policies that enhance the resiliency of our lands\, aquatic systems\, and communities to withstand adverse impacts of climate change\, such as more intense and frequent storms\, extreme coastal and inland flooding\, sea level rise\, altered weather patterns\, and seasonable variability. We hope to expand our understanding of the human effects of climate change\, including its ties to public health\, human migration\, and social justice. We will look to address climate change as an inherent issue of environmental justice\, and its disproportionate impact upon communities of color and low-income communities. Finally\, we seek models of resilient partnerships capable of withstanding the stressors and adversity posed by climate change. \nCBLP CEUs are available.
