SUMMARY:MNPS Monthly Program: Uncommon to Rare Apiaceae in Maryland with Rod Simmons

Presentations begin at 7:30PM and generally run until 8:45PM. \nA diversity of now-threatened Apiaceae occurs in Maryland\, with many restricted to particular physiographic regions and habitats. Rod Simmons\, plant ecologist and MNPS Board member\, will give a presentation on a variety of uncommon to rare Apiaceae in Maryland and vicinity\, especially regarding their associated natural communities and habitats. Identification will also be discussed. \nRod is a plant ecologist and conservation biologist\, with a background in biology\, botany\, and geology who has extensively surveyed the flora and natural communities of the mid-Atlantic region\, especially the inner Coastal Plain\, Fall Zone\, and Piedmont of the greater Washington\, D.C. area. He is a Research Associate with the National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution; a member of the Virginia Botanical Associates; former contract botanist for NatureServe\, National Park Service\, and others; and works closely with the Virginia and Maryland natural heritage programs. He is the author of numerous technical reports\, papers\, and articles\, and has published in scientific journals. He is a member and a past president of the Botanical Society of Washington and serves on the boards of the Virginia and Maryland native plant societies. He is a frequent lecturer and field trip leader for various organizations. He recently retired as Natural Resource Manager and Plant Ecologist for the City of Alexandria\, Virginia. \nWe can accommodate the first 300 people who enter the Zoom meeting at the meeting time. Sharon Selvaggio\, Pesticide Program Specialist at The Xerces Society\, will discuss why choosing pollinator-safe nurseries is important\, what drives the nursery industry’s use of pesticides and how plant buyers can evaluate nursery practices. She will also introduce Xerces’ new adoptable contract grow model for obtaining pollinator-safe native plants in quantity. \nTiny\, inconspicuous and unappreciated species hold our world together. On their behalf\, Sharon Selvaggio\, a staff member in The Xerces Society’s Pesticide Program\, works to help people recognize the risks of pesticides and move away from pesticide reliance toward more prevention-based pest management. SUMMARY:Webinar: NATIVE GRASSES FOR USE IN HOME GARDENS AND NATIVE MEADOWS
DESCRIPTION:Fall is the time that our native grasses strut their stuff! Join us for a fun\, non-technical discussion of native grasses and their \n\ndesign/aesthetic considerations for use in garden beds\,\nuse in native meadows\,\n soil and light requirements\,\n establishment and maintenance techniques.\n\nThe species we will discuss include: wood oats\, bottlebrush\, Virginia wildrye\, indiangrass\, little bluestem\, switchgrass\, purpletop\, bushy beardgrass\, purple lovegrass\, and woolgrass. \nOur speaker will be Dr. Sara Tangren. Her areas of specialization include native landscaping\, native seed production\, the native industry\, meadow making\, invasive plant control\, and rare plant conservation. Her restoration work has included a collaboration with the Anacostia Watershed Society to restore plant communities along the Anacostia River Bank\, with the University of Maryland Arboretum & Botanical Garden to protect the rare wildflower sundial lupine\, with MNCPPC to establish native meadows\, and with PEPCO to restore a native meadow community. She established the first native gardens at the University of Maryland in 2006\, and she has designed and implemented native gardens for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, the Vice President’s Mansion\, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. More recently she taught about native plants and sustainable landscaping for the Maryland Master Gardener program. She is currently concluding a report on native plant and seed use in the Eastern United States. \nThe program will be presented online through Zoom\, in webinar format. You will not be able to share your own audio or video with other participants\, but you will be able to submit questions in writing during the program. \nRegistration is required. After you register\, you will receive a registration confirmation email with a link to the Zoom program.  \nThe program is free and open to the public. \n1 CBLP CEU is available
