SUMMARY:35th Annual Design Symposium: Landscape\, Ecology\, and Culture (CT location & Virtual Option)
DESCRIPTION:Two Days of Landscape Exploration \nFounded in 1990 by Larry Weaner\, this annual two-day symposium has a long tradition of celebrating native plants and innovative ecological practice. Presenters reflect the diverse factors that shape our landscapes including landscape architects\, landscape designers\, horticulturists\, ecologists\, historians\, anthropologists\, artists\, and others. The series offers in-depth explorations of forward-looking and overlooked topics\, always seeking to connect theory with practical application. Join us as we continue to connect the dots between ecological restoration\, cultural landscape practice\, and fine garden design. \nCEUs available • 12 CEU hours for most types\nRecording of full program (CT venue) will be available mid-January and viewable for 3 months to all attendees (PA & CT in-person and virtual attendees). \nJanuary 10 –11\, 2024 in Bryn Mawr College\, Bryn Mawr\, PA\nJanuary 17–18\, 2024 in Connecticut College\, New London\, CT\nJanuary 17–18\, 2024 via Livestream (Virtual Only)\nRegister →\nEarly Bird Pricing (until 12/12)\n$360 Regular  •  $200 Student Early Bird (with ID)\nRegular Pricing (after 12/12):\n$385 Regular •  $225 Student (with ID)\n  \nMore information here.

SUMMARY:New Dimensions in the American Landscape (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Landscape designers who successfully employ an ecology-based approach typically draw from a variety of sources. The inextricable link between people and ecology only increases the need to broaden their investigative lens. Join us as we explore the integration of ecology-based design with people-based factors\, including the lingering effects of historic land use and the need to\naccommodate diverse cultural perspectives on the meaning of “ecology.”\nThis program is geared toward the Mid-Atlantic & New England regions. \nUp to 12 CBLP CEUs available.\nThursday and Friday\, January 20 and 21\, 2022\nThursday and Friday\, January 27 and 28\, 2022

SUMMARY:New Directions in the American Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The Culture-Ecology Bond: Perspectives for Designers \nCulture and ecology exist in a dynamic\nrelationship: culture shapes ecology and vice\nversa. Our 2020 conference will explore this\nfeedback loop as it pertains to landscape design\nand management. From historical as well as\ncontemporary perspectives\, our presenters will\nconsider the complex\, sometimes overlooked\nways in which culture and ecology interact and\nwhat this means for how ecology-based design\ncan be most effective. \nRegister by December 16 for early (discounted) rate. \n12 CBLP CEUs will be available.

SUMMARY:Native Woody Plants
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an overview of the native woody plants of the Philadelphia region. We will explore the difference between native and introduced plants and gain an understanding of how native plants perform in the landscape\, the built environment\, and the ecosystems around us. We will be using The Sibley Guide to Trees as our reference to compile a list of native trees that will be of help to you in designing and constructing landscape projects. There will be an outdoor component in the afternoon so dress appropriately. \nPresented by: \nRobert Wells\, Associate Director\, Arboriculture Outreach \nTony Dufour\, Registered Landscape Architect Certified Arborist\, and Owner\, Anthony Dufour Gardens \nFee: $140 (includes lunch) \nRegistration and more information: bit.ly/MorrisSOA or call (215)247-5777 x125 \nCBLP CEUs are available.

SUMMARY:Specifying\, Selecting\, and Planting High Quality Trees
DESCRIPTION:Tree quality and proper planting are key elements influencing survival\, establishment\, long-term health\, and maintenance needs.  However\, many trees delivered to your planting site may be sub-standard or poor quality or they may be planted incorrectly. This presentation will define ‘quality’ as it relates to trees and will focus on the steps necessary to produce\, identify\, and plant high-quality trees. Myths and realities of tree care and planting are reviewed including tree fertilization\, proper methods of staking and guying\, and the best approaches for pruning young trees to encourage proper development.  You will learn how to draft and enforce planting specifications\, evaluate the condition of root systems and branching structure to ensure that you purchase and receive high quality plants\, and how to interpret industry standards and best management practices. This course is designed for landscape business owners and foremen\, landscape architects\, arborists\, people who plant trees\, and others who are responsible for signing and fulfilling planting contracts. \nFee:  $140 (includes lunch) \nRegistration and more information: bit.ly/MorrisSOA or call (215)247-5777 x125 \nCBLP CEUs are available.
