SUMMARY:Water Cooler Talk: Eliminating Barriers to Green Stormwater Infrastructure Implementation (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Municipal land development regulations can present barriers to the widespread use of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI)\, such as rain gardens\, bioswales\, naturalized stormwater basins\, and tree trenches. GSI practices can improve water quality by incorporating nature-based practices that slow and infiltrate stormwater where it falls. This Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) presentation will summarize an auditing tool used to evaluate local development regulations to identify and overcome barriers to implementing GSI. Working closely with municipal officials\, PEC conducted audits of land development ordinances in the southeast Pennsylvania area and identified barriers to using GSI in stormwater\, zoning\, subdivision\, and land development ordinances. Recommendations were provided to participating municipalities on updating ordinances to enable “by right” applications of GSI practices. PEC will summarize this GSI audit work\, including an approach under development to conduct streamlined audits that focus on the more commonly identified GSI barriers. \n1 CBLP CEU

SUMMARY:Changing Landscaping Practices: Implications for Landowners and Local Officials (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:This free webinar will provide information on the benefits as well as challenges of lawn conversion and native landscaping. Speakers will provide firsthand knowledge from their experiences in designing\, installing\, planning for\, and regulating sustainable landscaping. Participants will also learn about new programs being developed to help with outreach\, funding\, and technical assistance for lawn conversion projects. \nTo help landowners manage their lawns in a more economical and environmentally friendly way\, a number of organizations and agencies at the state\, county\, and local levels are encouraging alternatives to the traditional practice of large\, mowed lawns. Such alternatives include maintaining\, creating\, or converting to more natural areas such as native meadows or patches of woods. The benefits of such practices include improved stormwater infiltration\, reduced flooding\, improved stream health\, and additional habitat and forage for pollinators. \nThis new way of managing our landscape is not without challenges\, including issues surrounding property maintenance and related codes\, as well as public/neighborhood perception and acceptance. \nThis event is being offered at no charge to participants. Registration is required to receive the link to access the webinar. Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording. \n1 CBLP CEU

DESCRIPTION:The success of newly planted trees in the landscape is not just dependent on proper planting and after care\, but also on proper analysis of the planting site. Site analysis considers the characteristics and history of the landscape to help ensure successful tree planting projects. This webinar reviews the site characteristics and how past history of a site can help determine what tree species are appropriate for planting.

SUMMARY:Managing Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:Managing Invasive Plants will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to properly identify invasive plants and develop strategies for treatment and control. \nInvasive weeds and pests are a major threat to our natural and cultivated landscapes\, spreading quickly and displacing or killing native plants. Invasive species (plants\, insects\, and animals) are costing the United States more than $138 billion each year\, due to their economic impact on agriculture\, forestry\, fisheries\, waterways\, wildlife\, and ornamental landscapes. Ecologists now rank invasion by exotic plants\, animals and pathogens second only to habitat loss as a major threat to local biodiversity. \nA portion of the day will be spent in the field looking at invasive plants\, the results of management\, and a calibration demonstration.

SUMMARY:Streambank Repair: Livestaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:At this workshop\, we will teach you about the process of cutting and planting live stakes\, branch segments of trees and shrubs that are planted during their winter dormancy. We will spend about 30 minutes discussing how the process works and then the remainder of the time we will spend practicing the techniques directly in a stream at the workshop site. You will gain the skills you need to repeat this experience at your stream while also helping to repair a stream in need (Pennsylvania has over 18\,000 miles of impaired streams throughout the state.)\n\nWHO IS THIS FOR?\n\nHomeowners and other property owners with eroding\, small streams \nConservation professionals and organizations working with similar streams or property owners \nHome owners associations \nAnyone interested in conservation and water quality \n\nWHAT WILL YOU LEARN?\n\nThe Basics of Livestaking: How it Works and How to Implement it \n\nRecognizing the impacts of streambank erosion\nIdentifying where livestaking is appropriate\nHarvesting your own stakes\nProperly planting livestakes\n\nRegister online by March 28.  The website has important info about what to expect\, what to wear\, etc. \n2 CBLP CEUs (or Hands On Hours) are available
