DESCRIPTION:Extreme heat and its health impacts are on the rise. Annually\, extreme heat already causes more deaths in the United States than all other weather-related causes combined\, with effects most pronounced in urban areas. Reducing urban heat exposure is an equity issue\, as low-income communities and communities of color are more likely to live in neighborhoods with older buildings\, low tree cover\, more heat-retaining surfaces\, and limited access to coping mechanisms such as air conditioning. In this webinar\, Edith de Guzman will introduce the efforts of the Los Angeles Urban Cooling Collaborative (LAUCC) — a multi-disciplinary\, national partnership of researchers and practitioners working to understand and implement urban cooling strategies in Los Angeles. Dr. David Eisenman will discuss heat-health impacts on the human body and how choices made in urban environments may prevent heat-related illness and death. Dr. Larry Kalkstein will present methods and findings of a recently-completed LAUCC modeling study revealing how various tree cover and solar reflectance “prescriptions” in L.A. could delay warming impacts and reduce heat-related mortality\, temperature\, humidity\, and oppressive air masses that lead to increased deaths\, and how this work could have relevance elsewhere. \n\n\nContact the Urban Forest Technology & Science Delivery Team at urban@fs.fed.us with questions\, feedback\, requests for special accommodations\, or speaker suggestions. SUMMARY:Webinar: A Call To Action for the Ash Tree
DESCRIPTION:Ash tree species in North America are under mortal threat from the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)\, now in 35 states and five Canadian provinces.  There are ongoing efforts to conserve this native tree species by producing genetically diverse\, resistant seedlings suitable for restoring ash on the landscape.  Identifying “lingering ash” is a critical component of amplifying these efforts\, and this presentation will explain the narrow window of time in which urgent actions are needed to discover and preserve these individuals.  Once identified\, these trees can be replicated through grafting for further testing.  Trees that are shown to have some level of resistance can be used as parents in conservation breeding programs.  Kathleen Knight and Jennifer Koch of the USDA Forest Service will review EAB and ash tree mortality from an ecological perspective and report on the breeding program and latest results.  Jonathan Rosenthal of the Ecololgical Research Institute will share a model training program\, based on their results\, to find and collect materials critical for breeding resistance into the ash tree population. \nGo to the website for login info \n1 CBLP CEU

DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nBill Selbig\, USGS\nRebecca Dohn\, City of Nashville\n\nA community with dense overhead tree canopy may benefit from reduced stormwater runoff volume through interception\, transpiration\, and infiltration but may also suffer from excess nutrients leached to nearby receiving waters from leaf litter. Bill Selbig will highlight ongoing research to help managers assess stormwater volume reduction potential of urban trees as well as understand how municipal leaf collection and street cleaning programs can limit the amount of nutrients in stormwater runoff. Rebecca Dohn will share advances and challenges in the city of Nashville’s efforts to use its urban forest for post-construction water quality stormwater control\, including challenges to balancing credits for tree preservation with potential for post-construction tree mortality. \n1 CBLP CEU is available.
