March 5 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM \nHoward County is piloting native plant landscaping beneath solar carports at the East Columbia Campus to evaluate how native species perform in the unique conditions created by solar infrastructure. The project examines plant survival\, growth\, and maintenance under variable shade\, concentrated runoff at panel drip lines\, and cooler microclimates\, while also assessing benefits such as erosion control\, stormwater management\, and pollinator habitat. \nInitial plantings were installed in spring 2025\, with supplemental planting added in fall 2025 to replace species that did not survive based on early observations. As a first-year pilot\, the project is generating practical lessons that will inform future design\, species selection\, and maintenance strategies for integrating native landscapes into solar canopy installations across the county. \nJulie Costantino is a Sustainability Project Manager with Howard County Government\, where she manages the CleanScapes residential stormwater program and Howard County Bee City USA\, the County’s pollinator conservation program. She works on countywide native plant projects and nature-based climate solutions through the County’s Climate Action Plan\, with a focus on how landscapes can support watershed health\, wildlife habitat\, and climate resilience. DESCRIPTION:Deicing salt—most commonly sodium chloride—is essential for winter safety in northern climates\, but it can be devastating to urban trees. Each spring\, roadside plants often show the effects through leaf discoloration\, canopy loss\, and decline\, especially in dense communities where trees already face limited growing space. Because salt doesn’t break down or disappear\, it accumulates in soil\, damaging tree health and degrading the soil microbiome over time. \nUsing soil DNA sequencing\, researchers found that salt-tolerant “salt-loving” bacteria dominated tree wells where trees repeatedly failed and required frequent replanting. However\, a stormwater capture and release system that flushes or dilutes salt helped trees thrive for six years with no replacements\, and those harmful microbes were absent. DESCRIPTION:Lauren Eaton and Paige Vichiola-Silva will share their monitoring experiences on the Farmington River in Connecticut and the Rouge River in Michigan before fielding participant questions and discussion topics. \nPresenters \nLauren Eaton is the Monitoring Manager at Friends of the Rouge and joined the team in 2023. She is so excited to be a steward of the watershed and to affect positive change for all beings that live in and around the Rouge River. She has volunteered for many years with the Huron River Watershed Council\, and some of her most memorable learning moments were outside or in the stream during those volunteer events so she hopes to be able to foster moments like those for others by serving as the Monitoring Manager. \nPrior to working at Friends of the Rouge\, Lauren was a contractor working for the United States Geological Survey’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLSC). At the GLSC\, Lauren worked on projects monitoring larval fish\, zooplankton\, and water quality in Lakes Michigan\, Huron\, Erie\, as well as the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers. She studied Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, and Aquatic Ecology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. \nPaige Vichiola-Silva is the Water Quality Manager at the Farmington River Watershed Association. Her work involves assessing the health of our watershed throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut by conducting water quality monitoring and research projects. Paige manages the chloride monitoring program and various in-situ continuous data loggers for temperature\, conductivity\, water level\, and dissolved oxygen. She is responsible for managing data\, conducting data analysis\, and ensuring that quality assurance and quality control align with data quality objectives. Then we’ll zoom in on a real-world case study from the Occoquan Reservoir\, where researchers and managers are grappling with the complex mix of land use\, weather patterns\, and human behavior that fuels rising chloride levels. This case will illustrate both the challenges and the practical management strategies communities can use to protect their drinking water supplies. \nPresenters \nDr. Stanley Grant is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech\, and Director of the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Lab (OWML) in Northern Virginia. He studies pollutant fate and transport through aquatic systems. In 2020\, Stan and his team were awarded a $3.6M NSF-funded Growing Convergence Research grant to study novel approaches for managing inland freshwater salinization. \nDr. Megan Rippy is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at VT\, stationed at the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Lab in northern Virginia. Her professional interests include 1) the effects of urban stormwater on aquatic ecosystems and public health\, 2) characterization and modeling of green infrastructure co-benefits and their social\, ecological\, and hydrological drivers and 3) urban water security (particularly during times of drought). DESCRIPTION:The Chesapeake Watershed Data Dashboard is an online tool that provides accessibility and visualization of data and technical information that can help guide water quality and watershed planning efforts. A large amount of scientific and technical information is available on the Dashboard for environmental managers and planners at both state and local levels. Much of this information has been updated or newly generated in recent years and can inform watershed restoration plan development and implementation. This presentation will include an overview of the Dashboard\, a live demonstration\, and time for questions/discussion. \nKaylyn Gootman has been with the Chesapeake Bay Program Office since 2022 as an Integrated Analysis Coordinator with the Science\, Analysis\, and Implementation Branch where she direct the efforts of multi-disciplinary teams in the development\, maintenance and updating of electronic Chesapeake Bay watershed information; coordinates Chesapeake Bay restoration and protection data analysis and interpretation activities from multiple sources and partners; serves as a technical lead for the development of computerized systems in support of continued integrated analysis of model simulated inputs/outputs of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem; develops and provides training on a full array of community-based environmental models\, data analysis\, and diagnostic tools used in the generation of Chesapeake Bay restoration and protection information; and shares scientific information via a variety of communication methods. \n1 CBLP CEU

In this course\, we focus on how to effectively design an aesthetically pleasing urban buffer that overcomes these challenges while helping meet water quality and habitat restoration goals. This interactive three-part workshop will combine online learning with an optional field trip to one of three sites in Virginia. Participants will then work collaboratively in small groups to develop a design for an urban buffer. The course will be led by CBLP instructors and guest speakers and will also cover: \n\nIntroduction to riparian habitats and ecology\nRegulatory and legal considerations for working on urban buffers\nCommon design challenges for urban buffers and strategies to address them\nBuffer case studies: inspiration for design\nBusiness and marketing opportunities\n\nThis class has been approved for 7CBLP CEUs and 7 LaCES PDH

DESCRIPTION:During this lunch time webinar Emily Wine will  discuss bee behavior\, preferences\, and interactions with native plants. Participants will develop a better understanding of what to plant and how to maintain landscapes to benefit pollinators. \nEmily Wine is the State Apiarist with the Delaware Department of Agriculture. Her interest in bees began as an undergrad at Cornell University\, where she joined the Beekeeping Club. She did her master’s degree in Entomology at Washington State University\, where she studied habitat for the bees that pollinate alfalfa grown for seed. As State Apiarist\, she works to safeguard Delaware’s pollinators. \nThere is no cost for this webinar\, but you must register in advance \nCertified pros may earn 1 CBLP CEU for attending this webinar
