Smart Salting: Enhanced Winter Maintenance Training (Maryland)
October 1, 2024 - January 22, 2025
The use of winter salts has increased over the past decade during winter weather for safer roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks. However, excessive salt application can damage infrastructure, pollute waterways in our environment, and pose threats to human health. This training program aims to provide a voluntary, statewide winter salt certification for private applicators that balances safety during winter weather months while minimizing salt application, improving application methods and your bottom line, and reducing contamination in the environment.
The target audience for this training course includes property managers, business owners, landscaping companies, and private contractors/salt applicators interested in learning effective ice melting strategies that protect the environment while also maintaining profitability and meeting customer safety expectations.
This training course is in partnership with Maryland Department of the Environment and University of Maryland Environmental Finance Center. A certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional will lead the training series offering their practical expertise.
This hybrid (virtual and in-person) training series will run from October 2024 – December 2024. The series includes 4 hours of independent online instruction, 2 hours of facilitated discussion forums, and 1 in-person session.
The virtual informational session for this training course is September 30th.
